Barreira between city history and cashew culture
Accommodation in Barreira
Barreira brings together city history and a vibrant cashew culture: the museum focuses on the history of local residents, and events showcase the processing of cashew fruit. The town also has a reservoir in its centre and landscapes across the municipality. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider whether you would prefer to base your stay around central cultural sites or the municipality’s landscapes.
History in the centre and cultural traces
The Museu Histórico de Barreira is located in the Mercado building in the centre. It tells the history of the city’s residents. The museum has undergone extensive revitalisation: the building’s facilities were improved, the exhibition rooms modernised, and the collection upgraded. Its location and subject matter give the visit a clear connection to the city.
Another historical landmark is Barreira’s first church. It was built as a chapel in 1914 and belonged to the parish of Acarape. From a later period comes Quadrilha Arraiá da Castanha, founded by Barreira’s Department of Culture in 2009. Together, these details show different sides of local history: the development of the church and organised festival culture.
Cashew products and local events
Cashew products took centre stage at the fourth Cajutec, held on 28 and 29 August 2025. The programme included themed workshops on making these products and a fair in the central square featuring products made from cashew fruit. The event also included the traditional competition for the best Cajuína. This event thus brought processing, products, and competition together in a programme explicitly focused on cashews.
Junina Flor do Caju also paid tribute to women who process cashew fruit. The festival returned after a five-year break. These themes offer a glimpse into different aspects of cashew culture: alongside the products, they also highlight the work of the people who process them.
An events calendar for 2023 listed the Feira do Caju in November and the Festejos do Padroeiro São Pedro from 19 to 29 June. It also listed the Festival de Quadrilhas do Município and the Festa do Chapéu on the second Saturday. A cultural overview for 2023 also mentions Natal de Luz, with performances and decorations in the town’s squares and streets. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates locally in advance.
The reservoir and the municipality’s landscapes
Açude do Centro is one of Barreira’s natural attractions and is located in the town centre. As part of the Festa Anual das Árvores in 2025, an ecological walk went from Lagoa do Distrito de Cajueiro to Açude no Centro da Cidade. This is a concrete example of an event that combined a walk with a destination in the urban area.
Beyond the centre, other landscape features are part of the municipality: Açude Criancó, as well as Serra do Olho D’água and Serra da Madre Paulina. Santuário de Madre Paulina is also one of the municipality’s cultural institutions, and Fazenda Criancó is part of its historical and cultural heritage. The town’s landmarks and the municipality’s landscapes can therefore be considered as distinct focal points for a trip.
