Aracati tells its story through an extensive historic center, churches with different origins, and places where collections, research and crafts come together. Its buildings span several centuries; at the same time, the history of the Black population and the goods sold at the Mercado Público reveal other sides of the town. When planning your trip, you can combine different interests rather than getting to know Aracati through just one building.

A Historic Center Spanning Three Centuries

Aracati’s historic center includes streets and architectural structures dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Its ensemble was recognized as national heritage and listed for protection by IPHAN in April 2000. The strictly protected area covers 154,824 m² and includes 275 buildings.

The Casa da Câmara Municipal e Cadeia de Aracati was also listed for protection by IPHAN in April 2000, along with the historic center. Construction began in 1779. This building therefore connects a specific year to the history of the protected ensemble without reducing the different buildings to a single period of origin.

Churches and Different Histories

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Brancos is Aracati’s cathedral. Construction began in the early years of the 18th century and was completed in the second half of the 19th century. It, too, was listed for protection by IPHAN in April 2000, along with the historic center. The long span between the first years of construction and its completion gives its building history a distinctive timeline.

A different story lies behind the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos. Aracati’s Black population built this church as a place of worship of their own because the main church excluded them on account of their skin color. The Sociedade dos Homens Pretos built the church in 1775. Those interested in Aracati’s history will therefore encounter here not just a construction date, but also the social exclusion to which the building was a response.

The Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim was founded around 1774. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, in turn, was built by the Irmandade de Nossa Senhora dos Homens Pardos Livres; Emperor Dom Pedro II confirmed its statutes on February 17, 1854. These details point to different brotherhoods and dates. The traditional festival of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim is celebrated every year on January 1.

Collections, Theater and Crafts

The Instituto do Museu Jaguaribano was founded on November 15, 1968, and opened on December 22 of the same year. It has a permanent collection and also serves as a research center on the history of Aracati and the Zona Jaguaribana. The collection and research therefore have different focuses: one preserves objects, while the other explores the region’s historical context.

At the Teatro Francisca Clotilde, the foundations of another stage dating from the early 20th century are displayed behind glass. This close-up view of preserved foundations adds a detail about theater history to the story of the buildings. The market and crafts offer another way to experience the town: the Mercado Público de Aracati sells goods including food and handicrafts. At the Centro de Artesanato de Aracati, visitors can find lacework, crafts made from coconut fibers, bottles filled with colored sand and cloth dolls.

For your trip, you can choose different focuses: historic architecture, church and social history, collections and research, or goods and crafts. If you are considering Aracati for a cultural stay, a vacation rental in Aracati is a suitable search option. Which of these aspects interests you most can help you decide whether the town is the right vacation destination for you.
