River, lock and Lago de Sobradinho

Sobradinho appeals to travellers who want to discover river landscapes, nautical activities and local traditions. The Barragem de Sobradinho is the city’s biggest tourist attraction. For a more technical perspective, there is the Eclusa de Sobradinho: it began operating in 1979 and allows vessels to overcome a height difference of 32.5 metres. Vessels can be up to 120 metres long and 17 metres wide, with a draught of up to 2.5 metres.

The lock system enables navigation along the stretch of the Rio São Francisco between Pirapora in Minas Gerais and Juazeiro in Bahia. Excursions on the Rio São Francisco are also possible near Sobradinho. Those interested in the river can therefore explore both the technical aspects of navigation and the opportunity to take a trip on the water.

Lago de Sobradinho is suitable for nautical sports and also hosts the Copa de Vela. If water sports are among your travel interests, the lake is a reason in its own right to consider Sobradinho. Its importance for nautical activities offers a different focus from the archaeological sites and local festival traditions.

Balneário Chico Periquito is a popular tourist destination in Sobradinho. It is suited to family relaxation and beach sports. Excursions to Ilha da Fantasia are also possible. When choosing a holiday rental, families can consider whether they want to combine their stay mainly with relaxation and beach sports or with trips on the river.

Rock art and history

The region’s history also gives Sobradinho a distinctive character. In the area of São Gonçalo da Serra in Sobradinho, 33 archaeological sites with rock art panels have been identified in the Serras do Saco do Morcego and Corrente. They are dated to between 9,000 and 6,500 years ago. For those interested in culture, this is a very different discovery from water sports or river navigation.

Vaqueiro tradition and festival culture

Forró do Vaqueiro brings together culture, faith and tradition. Its 21st edition took place from 3 to 5 October 2025 at Pátio de Eventos Vaqueiro Bryan in Sobradinho. The traditional Sunday programme includes breakfast for Vaqueiros, a parade and a mass. For the 2025 edition, the traditional Vaqueiro lunch was given a new format and held at Pátio de Eventos Vaqueiro Bryan to welcome Vaqueiros and visitors in greater comfort. These are specific details about how the festival is organised; if you are planning a stay around a future date, check the latest event information.

For Cavalgada do Vaqueiro, riders make their way through the streets and avenues of Sobradinho. Together with Forró do Vaqueiro, the event reveals another aspect of local tradition. When choosing a holiday rental in Sobradinho, your decision may therefore depend on whether you want to focus your trip mainly on time by the water, archaeological themes or cultural events.
