Paulo Afonso: Canyon, Rock Art and Hydroelectric Power
Accommodation in Paulo Afonso
The Rio São Francisco shapes Paulo Afonso with a natural canyon whose granite walls rise more than 110 meters. The area also features archaeological traces, a vibrant weaving tradition and a hydroelectric complex that brings the history of engineering to life. The destination offers a range of experiences, from a trip along the river to discoveries of rock art and regional history.
River Landscape and Canyon
The Município de Paulo Afonso encompasses 17 kilometers of the natural canyon of the Rio São Francisco. Established in 2009, the Monumento Natural do Rio São Francisco protects around 26,000 hectares along the riverbed and banks; the protected area includes Paulo Afonso, among other places. To view the canyon from a bridge, you can visit the Ponte Metálica on the BR-110. It connects Bahia and Alagoas.
A different perspective is offered by a trip through the canyon on the Catamarã Raso da Catarina. It lasts about three hours and includes a one-hour swimming break. The approximate duration and break make it easy to plan this river experience as a separate activity. The wider region is also home to the 6,400-square-kilometer protected area of Raso da Catarina. It includes biological and Indigenous protected areas, is covered in Caatinga vegetation, and features wind-sculpted rocks at Baixa do Chico whose shapes resemble castles, towers and chess pieces.
Archaeology and Local History
Paulo Afonso’s cultural history is also very much in evidence. The Cidade das Pedras area features dozens of rock inscriptions that point to the presence of groups of people between approximately 3,000 and 12,000 years ago. The project of the same name is based on the large concentration of archaeological sites in the Município: IPHAN has identified and registered around 190 sites there. Paulo Afonso is also home to rock paintings around 9,000 years old, protected by the Museu de Artes Rupestres.
The Museu Casa de Maria Bonita offers a glimpse into more recent history. It is located in the rural Povoado Malhada da Caiçara, 38 kilometers from the city center. The birthplace of Maria Gomes de Oliveira, the Cangaceira Maria Bonita, retains its original earthen-house architecture and has been opened to the public for visits. The old tradition of hand weaving is also preserved in Malhada Grande, a district of Paulo Afonso.
Another destination for those interested in archaeology is the Sítio Arqueológico Capela. It is part of the Complexo Arqueológico de Paulo Afonso and lies around 25 kilometers from the city center. As the region’s first archaeological site, it was prepared and opened for tourist visits. These different locations let you make archaeological traces, rock art and local history separate focal points of your trip.
Engineering, Leisure and Regional Cuisine
The Complexo Hidrelétrico de Paulo Afonso is considered an engineering landmark; visits are possible by appointment. A guided tour of the Usina Hidrelétrica de Paulo Afonso I, inaugurated in 1955 as the complex’s first facility, lets visitors see the turbines and some original panels. This offers a distinct way to explore the area’s history, alongside nature and archaeology experiences.
For a break in town, there is Parque Belvedere, also known as Jardim dos Namorados: a leisure area with large trees, ornamental plants and a fountain. Bars and kiosks line Prainha, which is visited year-round by residents and tourists. Rancho da Carioca serves regional cuisine there, including fish from the Rio São Francisco and traditional home-style cooking.
Factor Distances into Your Travel Plans
If you’re planning excursions beyond the city center, you can take their distances into account when choosing a vacation rental. Serra do Umbuzeiro is in Povoado Riacho, 20 kilometers from the city center; a walk there leads to a cross at the highest point. Sítio Arqueológico Capela is around 25 kilometers from the city center, and Museu Casa de Maria Bonita is 38 kilometers away. Paulo Afonso Airport is in the Município of the same name in Bahia, around 4 to 5 kilometers from the city center. It can be reached by taxi, motorcycle taxi and bus, as well as via a paved road.
For families looking to include nature, culture and engineering in their trip, Paulo Afonso offers several different themes to choose from. You can focus on the river and canyon, or add visits centered on rock art, archaeology and hydroelectric power. The directory also lists Ipupiara, Boninal, Araças, Piatã, Tabocas do Brejo Velho, Caetité, Santana and Santa Cruz Cabrália.
