Itiúba – Rock Landscapes and Culture
Accommodation in Itiúba
Itiúba combines striking rock landscapes with regional music and festival culture. Its defining features include rocky peaks, distinctive named natural formations and places to enjoy the water in the municipality and nearby areas. Cultural memorials and festival traditions add to the picture. When planning your trip, you can make nature, water and culture your different priorities; the specific place names provide clear points of reference.
Rocks and Mountain Ranges
Serra do Cruzeiro is a mountain with a rocky summit made up of large boulders and rock slabs. Crosses stand at the summit and are considered to be more than 200 years old. Here, a striking natural formation and a historical connection come together. Laje do Céu is also located on the summit of Serra da Itiúba, at a stated elevation of 600 metres. While the rocks and crosses stand out at Serra do Cruzeiro, the summit location and elevation provide points of reference for Laje do Céu.
The individually named rock formations also have specific locations. Pedra do Benção Meu Tio is a natural landmark in Bairro Sertanejo. Pedra dos Namorados is in the centre of Laje Grande and is considered a romantic rock formation. Pedra do Macaco is located at Calçada de Pedra. Pedra de Dois Bicos is in Serra do Calumbi and is considered an interesting rock formation. Pedra da Cabeça is in Serra da Pedra Solta. Serra da Capoeira is home to two other notable places: Pedra Montada is considered a mysterious rock formation, while Laje Preta is considered an eerie place. Morro da Várzea Formosa is also among Itiúba’s impressive natural features.
Cave, River and Reservoir
Gruta da Serra do Souza, about 18 kilometres from Itiúba, offers a different kind of landscape. Its wide entrance and several interior steps resembling polished benches give the cave a distinctive character. About 33 kilometres from Itiúba, the Rio Itapicuru-Açu lies near the village of Covas; it is considered a place for swimming and outings. Based on the approximate distances given, the river is farther from Itiúba than the cave. A cave with a striking entrance and interior steps and a river destination associated with swimming and outings therefore offer different nature experiences.
At the village of Taquari in the municipality of Itiúba, Açude Jacurici is a major tourist attraction, and fishing is also popular at the reservoir. Taquari itself is considered a tourist destination because it is surrounded by, or supplied by, the waters of Açude Jacurici. The water destinations therefore have different points of focus: swimming and outings at Rio Itapicuru-Açu, and fishing and the connection to Taquari at Açude Jacurici.
Music, Festival Traditions and History
Music and tradition complement the nature experiences. Filarmônica 4 de Janeiro de Itiúba won Group B at the XIV Festival de Filarmônicas do Recôncavo-FESTFIR. A cultural report dated 18 June 2025 notes that the Arraiá da Sustentabilidade in Itiúba honoured the tradition of Brazilian June festivals and featured a Quadrilha Junina dance performance.
The Obelisco Bendegó stands at the railway station in the village of Jacurici, which belongs to the municipality of Itiúba. It commemorates the engineering achievements and logistical effort involved in transporting the Bendegó meteorite.
