Ilha de Boipeba combines protected natural areas with trails through forest and coconut groves, coral reefs and a vibrant local culture. The island can only be reached by sea or river; there is no automobile traffic. These distinctive features shape both how you explore the island and the kind of stay that might suit your trip.

Nature among mangroves and restinga

Ilha de Boipeba is part of the Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) of the Tinharé and Boipeba islands. The habitats in this protected area include estuaries, mangroves, coral reefs, restinga, wetlands and remnants of the Mata Atlântica, along with their associated fauna. Boipeba is also home to the largest fragment of wooded restinga in Baixo Sul. Visitors to the island therefore encounter not just beaches, but a varied landscape where coastal and forest nature stand side by side.

A striking example of the island’s beaches is Praia de Tassimirim: a natural tunnel opens onto a small beach with warm pools, surrounded by almond trees and tall coconut palms. Praia da Cueira also has its own distinctive landscape. There, a well-preserved coconut grove lies within a fazenda. On the island, you’ll find both beaches defined by vegetation and wooded landscapes.

Getting around on foot and on the water

On Ilha de Boipeba, you can take short or long walks along the beaches and follow forest and coconut grove trails across around 20 kilometers of coastline. A forest trail leads from Praia do Outeiro through the Mata Atlântica toward Praia de Tassimirim. A different trail runs through a fazenda between Moreré and Praia de Bainema; along the way, you’ll find Guaiamum crab burrows, while birdsong and flowering vegetation are also part of the trail experience. You can plan your outings according to whether you’re more interested in stretches of beach, forest or the experience of walking through a fazenda.

At Praia de Moreré, coral reefs shape the experience on the water. At low tide, natural pools form there, teeming with diverse fish. The natural pools offshore can be reached from the beach by small boats and are suitable for diving. Dives at Praia de Moreré can depart either from the beach or by boat. If you choose the island for a vacation rental, you can take these different experiences into account when planning your stay without having to combine them into a single outing.

Cultural sites and festivals

The Igreja do Divino Espírito Santo de Velha Boipeba is an important architectural and cultural monument. Jesuits built it around 1610, and it was expanded in the 19th century. The church dedicated to Boipeba’s patron saint was protected as a heritage site by decree, preserving its cultural and architectural heritage as well as its symbolic value to the people of Cairu. A visit to the island can therefore also include its religious and historical traditions.

A special local celebration is the Festa de Iemanjá on February 2. It has been organized by the Magalhães Meneses family since 1987 and traces its origins to the devotion of Dona Neide Magalhães. During the maritime procession, decorated boats carry flowers and other offerings for Iemanjá. The Festa do Divino Espírito Santo de Boipeba takes place at Easter and includes the Divino flag, the cleaning of the church, a novena, processions and a festive Mass.

The Museu do Osso and Casa da Cultura Boipeba are also presented as cultural sites for visitors. The history of the Museu do Osso is closely connected to its founder and curator, “Mister Cabeludo”: he began collecting bones from various marine animals at the age of ten. For families who want to discover local stories and traditions as well as experience nature, these sites offer a different perspective on Boipeba than its trails and beaches.

Island pace and local cuisine

As Ilha de Boipeba can only be reached by sea or river and there are no automobiles, people get around the island on foot or by tractor. Take this into account when choosing where to stay: visiting the island is organized differently from a trip where you can use a car for every journey. The vacation rental that’s right for you therefore also depends on how you want to spend your time between beaches, hiking trails, culture and water activities.

One culinary destination is Praia da Cueira, where visitors are encouraged to try “lagosta do Guido.” Tourists consider it one of the region’s best specialties. Together with the varied landscapes and cultural experiences, this makes for an island stay you can shape around your interests—whether you want to spend more time on trails, by the water or at cultural sites.
