In Ibicoara, waterfall landscapes meet long trails and cultural discoveries. The municipality offers different ways to experience nature, from short walks to a nearby waterfall to multi-day routes and larger protected areas. Past craft and literary events are also part of the destination’s cultural history.

Waterfalls and Trails in the Municipality

Cachoeira do Buracão is considered a landmark of the municipality of Ibicoara. The waterfall is reported to be 81 metres high and 50 metres deep. Along the way are the waterfalls Recanto Verde, das Andorinhas and das Orquídeas. There are also several places along the route by the river where swimming is permitted; conditions may vary.

The trail to Cachoeira do Buracão is listed as 3 kilometres each way, or 6 kilometres for the round trip. The average walking time is 40 minutes to one hour in each direction. Accompaniment by registered guides is mandatory. Check current guide arrangements and trail conditions before setting out.

Cachoeira da Fumacinha is also one of the municipality’s tourist attractions. From Ibicoara, travel towards the village of Baixão; from there, continue on foot to the waterfall. An upper route of 8 kilometres and a lower route of 9 kilometres are described. Check trail conditions and local guidance before setting out.

A longer route in the municipality covers 40 kilometres from Mucugê to Campo Alegre. On the second day, the route goes to the top of Cachoeira Fumacinha, where the canyon can be seen. It then leads back to Toca do Vaqueiro and on to Campo Alegre, a district of Ibicoara. If you are considering this multi-day route, check overnight accommodation options and trail conditions in advance.

At Cachoeira do Véu de Noiva in the municipality, the waterfall has a drop of 30 metres, and the pool below stretches for 50 metres. It is about 30 kilometres from the town of Ibicoara to the car park, roughly a one-hour drive, depending on road conditions. From the car park, a 3.5-kilometre trail leads to the main waterfall. Check road and trail conditions before your trip.

Natural Areas and Other Waterfalls

Cachoeira do Rio Preto is close to the municipal seat, about 3 kilometres away. The trail passes through canyons and remnants of the Atlantic Forest; there is a swimming pool at the waterfall. The larger natural area is Parque Natural Municipal do Espalhado: this 612-hectare protected area is 29 kilometres from the municipal seat of Ibicoara. It permits the controlled use of natural resources, as well as nature-based recreation and ecotourism. The large waterfalls Fumacinha, Licuri, Rio Preto and Véu de Noiva are also listed within Parque Municipal do Espalhado.

Further afield in the region is Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina. It covers 152,000 hectares and protects part of the Serra do Sincorá, the northern section of the Serra do Espinhaço. Landscapes in the park include, among others, Mata Atlântica, Cerrado and Caatinga. The national park can be reached via Ibicoara and five other municipalities.

Cultural History and a Local Speciality

Several past editions of Feira de Artesanato Altas Artes took place in the Alto do Cemitério neighbourhood of Ibicoara. In addition to crafts, the event featured circus, music, dance, theatre, other artistic performances and workshops for the community.

The first Feira Literária de Ibicoara (FLIBIC) took place from 21 to 23 May 2025. The three-day programme included literary discussions, cultural performances, book presentations, workshops, exhibitions, audiovisual offerings, storytelling events, performances and parades. The two events showcase different aspects of local cultural life: crafts and community performances, as well as literature and stage events.

Cachaça Cachoeira do Buracão is considered a special tasting experience. If you are interested, ask locally about tasting opportunities.
