Caetité invites you to discover its cultural sites and history through specific places: a restored 19th-century mansion stands on the main square, and another restored house is closely connected to the life of educator Anísio Teixeira. Museums, theatres and festival traditions add to this picture. The wider Caetité destination also includes protected heritage sites and landscapes.

Cultural Sites and Places of Remembrance

The Espaço INB de Ciência, Tecnologia e Cultura is located on the main square in a restored 19th-century mansion. Casa Anísio Teixeira is the restored former “O Sobrado”: Anísio Spínola Teixeira was born there and spent his childhood there. The house serves as a cultural centre and also includes a Centro de Memória. In Caetité, you can therefore encounter both a landmark building on the main square and a place whose history is directly linked to a well-known figure.

MASB is an institution dedicated to preserving and researching archaeological assets. Visits to its Caetité location require advance booking. Listed opening hours are Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 13:30 to 17:30; confirm in advance whether a visit is possible and whether these hours are still valid. This is especially important if you want to make a museum visit a fixed part of your trip.

The Senhora Sant’Ana Cathedral is also part of Caetité’s historic heritage. Casa do Barão de Caetité is protected for its cultural significance. Together with Casa Anísio Teixeira, these places offer different points of connection for a cultural stay: religious heritage, protected architecture and the memory of Anísio Teixeira.

Festival Traditions and the Stage

The festival in honour of Senhora Sant’Ana includes a novena and the traditional procession of ox carts. In 2026, the procession is described as its fiftieth edition; its route passes through the city’s main streets. The celebrations for 2 July include traditional riding groups. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance rather than assuming a festival will take place on your travel date.

Cine Teatro Anísio Teixeira, located in Casa Anísio Teixeira, has an auditorium as well as spaces for cinema and theatre. The house thus brings several cultural functions together under one roof.

More to Explore in the Wider Caetité Destination

In the wider Caetité destination, the Museu do Alto Sertão da Bahia is a territorial museum with several locations. Its headquarters are in the municipality of Caetité; the museum comprises ten museum institutions and also includes the municipalities of Guanambi and Igaporã. This municipal and regional dimension adds to the picture of the individual cultural sites. In Caetité’s rural area, the Casa Santa Bárbara on Fazenda Santa Bárbara is part of the protected cultural heritage. The Capela de São Sebastião in the municipality of Hospício is also one of the three protected heritage properties in this rural area.

Cultural institutions and traditions in the wider Caetité destination offer further insights: the Poligonal Cultural de Caetité is the officially designated area for protecting the historic centre. Conservatório de Música Anísio Teixeira offers workshops in guitar, accordion, keyboard, flute, choral singing and music theory. The Ponto de Cultura at Casa Anísio Teixeira records the knowledge and craft techniques of the popular masters of Sertão Produtivo. The Centro de Memória at Casa Anísio Teixeira also preserves historic architecture and contemporary furniture; the centre presents the habits and customs of the Teixeira family in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Landscape and Nature Watching

In the wider Caetité destination, the Nascente do Riacho Pedreira spring lies within Caetité’s urban environmental protection zone. A field survey on 3 August 2023 recorded fully intact riparian vegetation there. Atlantic Forest formations predominate around the spring; at the same time, the area is an ecotone bordering Caatinga and Cerrado formations. During the same field survey, Tico-Tico, Sabiá-laranjeira and Canário-da-terra were observed. These observations relate to that visit and give nature enthusiasts specific species names without promising sightings at another time.

A path near the spring leads to the protected environmental zone of Riacho do Alegre and towards the area around the spring. It is used by local residents, people doing sports and students. This highlights a difference between cultural sites and natural features in the wider destination: you can decide which to focus on and look for a holiday rental accordingly. If you plan to visit MASB, advance booking and confirmation that a visit is possible are required.
