Andaraí is shaped by its diamond mining history and religious traditions; at the same time, waterfalls, canoe trips and trails to Vale do Pati offer a range of nature experiences. When looking for a holiday apartment in Andaraí, you can first consider whether local history and festival culture or landscapes and outdoor activities should be the focus of your trip.

Mining Heritage and Festival Traditions

Igatu, a district of the municipality of Andaraí, is considered a living museum of Brazil’s diamond mining history. The town’s architectural, urban and landscape ensemble was listed as a heritage site in 2000. Andaraí’s urban heritage also includes various chapters of this history: early huts and shelters of mining pioneers stand alongside colonial mansions from the heyday of diamond mining. The town’s built heritage thus reflects different periods of mining.

Imperial processions are an established part of the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo in Andaraí. The festival also includes the Rabeia, a cultural and folkloric event: thirty days before the Festa do Divino, a large mast is carried through the streets of Andaraí to the main church. A municipal description from 2025 describes Acorda Andaraí as a traditional street event, when festivities fill the streets in the early morning of April 28. The various customs reveal the town’s religious character in different ways.

The food culture also tells the story of the region. Godó, a typical dish of the Chapada, originated in Povoado do Paty in the municipality of Andaraí: when it was created, beans were replaced with green bananas.

Waterfalls, Canoe Trips and Trails

Within the municipality, Cachoeira do Ramalho lies inside Chapada Diamantina National Park, in a remote and difficult-to-access area. The waterfall is about 80 metres high and is located on a tributary on the left bank of the Baiano. It is considered one of the municipality’s main tourist attractions and is visited both by residents of the region and by people who take part in adventure tourism. Check local conditions before setting out.

Other waterfalls offer different nature experiences. Cachoeira do Samuel has a waterfall about 100 metres high and a pool for swimming; a three-hour trekking route leads to it. You can also swim at Poço da Donana, in the municipality, beyond Toca do Morcego. Access is via a path of about five to eight minutes over rocks and a small staircase.

You can reach Cachoeira do Roncador by boat from Fazenda Velha or by following a seven-kilometre walking trail from Rio Garapa. These routes therefore differ both in mode of transport and distance. At Pantanal Marimbus, Fazenda Marimbus offers a canoe trip in Canadian-style canoes. The route passes through flooded areas where you can see many birds and brightly coloured aquatic plants.

Andaraí as a Gateway to Vale do Pati

Andaraí is described as a gateway to Vale do Pati. Vale do Pati is one of the main destinations for adventure sports in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia. Ladeira do Império, in the municipality of Andaraí, is used for five-day routes to Vale do Pati. One access route is considered the fastest, takes about three hours and heads towards Andaraí. The time estimate is approximate; check trail conditions before setting out.

The nature destinations differ in their landscapes and the access routes described: a canoe trip through flooded areas, trails to waterfalls and routes towards Vale do Pati.
