Macapá offers a range of highlights for a trip: a fortress built over a precisely documented period, its connection to the zero-degree latitude line, Amazonian culture and science, native forest, and local cuisine. Consider whether you would most like to get to know the city through its cultural history, nature, activities or food. These themes can help guide your holiday planning without limiting Macapá to just one kind of experience.

Culture and different perspectives

The Fortaleza de São José de Macapá was built between 1764 and 1782 and is now a museum. The fortress is a concrete starting point if you are interested in Macapá’s historic architecture. The Museu Sacaca offers a different focus: this cultural and scientific institution brings scientific knowledge together with the folk traditions of Amazonian peoples.

The Museu Sacaca also includes an open-air exhibition developed with the involvement of Indigenous communities and riverside communities from Amapá. This lets you explore two distinct cultural topics during your stay: the fortress, and the museum as an institution with scientific and traditional connections. For a trip that includes a range of interests, you can choose which perspective you would like to explore in more depth.

The Equator, nature and activities

The Marco Zero do Equador marks zero degrees latitude. The equinox can be observed there in March and September. The Marco Zero also includes a cultural space for shows, exhibitions and commercial activities.

The Bioparque da Amazônia offers a different focus. It protects and conserves 107 hectares of native Amazon rainforest and brings together three biomes found in the state of Amapá. The size of the protected forest area and the variety of biomes give nature enthusiasts a concrete reason to include the Bioparque in their travel plans. Visitors can also take part in adventure sports there, including tree climbing, canoeing and ziplining. Nature conservation and active pursuits are thus different aspects of this place. The Trapiche Eliezer Levy adds another option, offering views of the Amazon River and a cable car ride. This provides different kinds of experiences alongside the Bioparque’s nature and sports offerings.
