Roteiro between Lagoon and Coast
Accommodation in Roteiro
Roteiro is shaped by the interplay between coast and lagoon. At Praia do Gunga, a white sand spit fringed with coconut palms in the municipality of Roteiro, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Rio São Miguel meet. Laguna do Roteiro lies at the river’s mouth and flows into Praia do Gunga. The waterscape and coastline offer different ways to enjoy your stay: views, water activities, local cuisine and history.
Coastal Views and Lagoon Scenery
From Mirante Gutemberg Breda on AL-101 Sul, you can see the entire coconut grove at Praia do Gunga, as well as the beaches and reefs of Barra de São Miguel. Mirante do Gunga offers panoramic views of the coconut groves. Each viewpoint highlights different features of the landscape: one offers a sweeping view of the palms, beaches and reefs, while the other provides a panorama of the groves. Visitor conditions at Mirante do Gunga may change; check before your visit.
The waters also offer different experiences. The calm waters of Laguna do Roteiro are suited to leisurely excursions and water sports, and Praia do Gunga is also suitable for water sports. When planning your trip, you can choose between the lagoon and the coast as settings for water activities. The natural environment also includes the Laguna do Roteiro mangrove reserve. It protects the mangroves and the wildlife that depends on them. The lagoon is therefore not only part of the landscape, but also a protected area with a clearly defined purpose.
History, Festivals and Cuisine
Local tradition offers an explanation for the name Roteiro: residents later renamed the settlement because they believed Jesuits had discovered there the “Roteiro” of Dom Pero Fernandes Sardinha. Sardinha had been consumed by Indigenous people in the region. The story connects the town’s history with a historical tradition from the area. Another specific chapter in its history is the first chapel: Francisca de Albuquerque built it in 1900 at Sítio Livramento in honor of Nossa Senhora do Livramento.
Roteiro’s patron saint and emancipation festivals attract visitors. If you would like to include a festival in your travel plans, check the dates in advance. This lets you make culture a distinct focus alongside the landscape and waters when deciding which aspects of the destination to explore.
Roteiro’s cuisine includes sururu, maçunim and oysters, harvested directly from the lagoons. Restaurants at Praia do Gunga serve grilled fish, shrimp and seafood broths. You can choose between the lagoon ingredients listed above and the dishes served by restaurants on the beach. Menus and availability may change.
Find the Right Vacation Rental for Your Trip
When searching for a vacation rental in Roteiro, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: would you like to center your stay around the lagoon and coastal scenery, are you interested in water sports, or would you rather focus more on cuisine, history and festivals?
