Tolhuin: Nature Trails, Forest and Culture
Accommodation in Tolhuin
Tolhuin offers many reasons to spend time outdoors and enjoy its culture: a self-guided trail in the town center, birdwatching, forest and peatland landscapes, and cultural venues. When choosing a vacation rental, it may therefore be important to consider which of these experiences interest you most and which places you want to focus your trip around.
Short Trails and Birdwatching
The Paseo del Ecotono runs through the town center of Tolhuin. This self-guided trail is 800 meters long and easy. If you would like to include a manageable walk in your trip, it offers a straightforward option that does not require a guided tour.
On the southern shore of Lago Khami (Fagnano), a lakeside trail no longer than 800 meters leads to Cascada la Porfiada. The destination is a waterfall; the town-center trail and the lakeside trail differ both in location and in character. If you enjoy birdwatching on an outing, the Haiken chache interpretive trail offers another option, where you can observe migratory and native birds. The recommended period is September to March.
The Paisaje en Movimiento interpretive trail in the Reserva Provincial Laguna Negra offers a different focus. The trail is considered easy and is suitable for family hikes, birdwatching, cycling and sport fishing. Information panels share details about the species found there and the geological formation of the landscape. You can see Andean-Patagonian forest and peat bogs. This makes it possible to combine a walk with insights into habitats and how they developed.
Laguna Negra and Outings in the Surrounding Area
There are two access points to distinguish when navigating the Reserva Provincial Laguna Negra. The southern access is for pedestrians only and leads from the parking area at Lago Khami into the reserve. The northern access is for vehicles and runs via Av. de los Ñires and the local roads. Which side is right for your outing therefore also depends on whether you want to take the footpath from the parking area or drive in via the northern access.
There are also different options for active days in the area around Tolhuin. Trekking, canoeing, sport fishing and camping are available at Laguna del Indio; there is also a suitable cycling route. Cerro Jeujepen has a moderately difficult trail to the summit. The round trip takes approximately three hours. If you are interested in panoramic views, the Mirador del Cerro Jeujepen is also in the area around Tolhuin: it is about 300 meters above sea level and offers a 360-degree view.
In the area around Tolhuin, the Reserva Río Valdez protects areas of forest, peat bogs and a small portion of the Ecotono. These landscapes complement the nature experiences along the trails of the Reserva Provincial Laguna Negra, but the two places should not be considered the same. If forests and peat bogs are what appeal to you most, these areas may help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
Culture and Sweet Treats
The Casa de la Cultura Municipal is one of the venues overseen by the Municipality of Tolhuin’s cultural and educational department. The department’s cultural spaces are open to the public and are dedicated on an ongoing basis to preserving, sharing and promoting art and cultural exhibitions, as well as educational and artistic events. The Festival Escultura en Hielo was held in Tolhuin in 2022 for more than the tenth consecutive time. This offers a time-specific glimpse into the town’s cultural life; it is not information about a future event.
For a sweet break, you can visit the traditional La Unión bakery in the town center and try its specialties. Nature, culture and a culinary stop are different interests to consider and balance as you plan your trip.
