Valle Fértil is an oasis surrounded by sierras, with diverse vegetation: cardones, jarillas, cacti and algarrobo trees shape its plant life. It also offers striking landscapes and experiences that bring together nature, culture and water.

Sierras and birdlife

The Sierras del Valle Fértil form the westernmost foothills of the Sierras Pampeanas system. Another perspective on nature awaits at the Reserva de Uso Múltiple Valle Fértil: it covers 800,000 hectares and is home to numerous bird species. More than 200 bird species live among algarrobo, mistol and quebracho trees in Parque Natural Valle Fértil. The reserve and the natural park each offer their own appeal to travellers interested in landscapes and wildlife.

Landforms and trails in Ischigualasto

Parque Provincial Ischigualasto lies in the northeast of San Juan Province, in the departments of Valle Fértil and Jáchal. The Circuito Tradicional takes about three hours to drive. It leads to striking landforms such as El Hongo, El Submarino and Cancha de Bochas. Their names provide clear landmarks along the route; the approximate duration helps you plan this visit as a separate item on your itinerary.

If you’d like to experience the landscape on foot, there are several destinations to choose from: the Caminata al Cerro Morado leads to the summit and offers panoramic views as well as glimpses of the area’s varied colours. In Parque Provincial Ischigualasto, trekking routes lead to the Río Salado and Quebrada de la Peña, where the landscape has been shaped by river and wind erosion. The trails therefore differ both in their destinations and in the landscape experiences described.

Culture and regional traditions

Yacimiento de Ischigualasto includes several sites featuring Indigenous rock art from pre-Hispanic periods. It adds a cultural perspective on the region’s history to the area’s natural attractions. The construction history of Iglesia San Agustín y Ntra. Sra. del Rosario also spans several decades: construction began in 1890, and the church was inaugurated in 1946.

Capilla San Juan Bautista was built around 1911 by local residents. Its façade is clad in stone and adorned with a bell gable. Another cultural landmark is the Fiesta del Chivo, held every July in La Majadita, Valle Fértil. If you’re interested in regional traditions, you can plan your trip around this event.
