Winegrowing, religious buildings and geological features give Albardón Department a multifaceted character. This region in San Juan Province offers different starting points for planning a trip: you may be interested in wine culture and regional cuisine, the history of its chapels or geological traces in the landscape. This thematic diversity makes Albardón a destination that cannot be reduced to a single type of experience.

Wine culture and regional cuisine

Bodega El Milagro began operating in Albardón in 2002. Its owner had acquired vineyards there to produce handcrafted wines. Today, the offerings include guided cellar tours and product tastings. The winery also has a delicatessen, a ham-curing room and an ecumenical space. Here, wine production is accompanied by culinary offerings and other features of the venue.

The gastronomic experience “Sabores entre albardas” puts local restaurants and regional flavours at the centre. The participating restaurants are registered with the Tourism and Culture Office. If you would like to discover Albardón mainly through its cuisine and winegrowing, you can use this offering together with the eastern Bici Tour route as a thematic guide: it is called “Iniciación a la Vitivinicultura” and introduces irrigation and cultivation systems as well as winegrowing. The route includes visits to two wineries with tastings of regional products.

Chapels, local history and religious heritage

Several chapels illustrate different aspects of local architecture and religious history. The Capilla San Nicolás de Tolentino is located in Las Lomitas and is part of the cultural and natural heritage of San Juan Province. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1942. Its colonial architecture preserves materials such as adobe bricks, reeds, mud and round timber. Inside is an altarpiece from the Basílica de Santo Domingo, which was destroyed in the 1944 earthquake.

The Capilla en Honor a San Roque in La Cañada is also part of the province’s cultural and natural heritage. Its history dates back to 1913, when residents of La Cañada built an oratory in the territory of Albardón. The Capilla Artesanal Virgen de la Carrodilla offers a different design accent: it was built by local residents and designed by local winemaker and sculptor Juan Diapolo. It houses the patron saint of the vineyards; from a distance, its original design resembles a pink-painted boat.

A dedicated tourist route covering the department’s main religious sights is another way to explore its religious heritage. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados is the department’s patron church and stands in Villa General San Martín. Another landmark in local history is the Complejo Cultural Cine Teatro Albardon: it opened in 1950 as Cine Aconcagua and remains opposite the department square. The Gruta de la Virgen de Lourdes de las Siete Vertientes was created in 2007 with contributions from the Albardón community and worshippers from other places.

Guided discoveries and a distinctive landscape

Bici Tour offers cultural, scenic, geological and scientific tours of Albardón led by specialist guides. These include a walk through the town centre focusing on history and culture. The western route leads to the areas of Las Tapias and El Rincón. Its tourist and historical tour covers mining, agriculture and livestock farming, as well as cultural and religious viewpoints and the San Martín campaign. This gives visitors additional thematic options beyond winegrowing. Tapiecitas in Albardón Department was also a waypoint for the IV Division of the Army of the Andes under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Juan Manuel Cabot.

One geological feature is the active La Laja fault, which is visible to the naked eye on the hill. The terrain fracture shows the displacement of two large rock formations of different geological ages. This is distinct from the “La Laja, Epicentro del Terremoto de 1944” promenade, inaugurated in the foothills of the Sierra de Villicum and intended to be promoted as a tourist and scientific attraction. Those interested in art and crafts can visit Cinco Elementos, which has an underground ceramics workshop and offers an art and sculpture experience based on clay, in contact with nature.

Campo de Estrellas in Las Tierritas is planned as a future experience. On a private site prepared for this purpose, it is intended to include an exploratory walk, regional food and wines, and astronomical observations led by specialists. When choosing a holiday rental, you can therefore first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: winegrowing and cuisine, religious heritage, local history, geology or art. This lets you tailor your accommodation search in the department to your personal travel interests.
