Citronella and the identity of El Soberbio

El Soberbio reveals its distinctive character through small-scale, artisanal production of essential oils and nature experiences ranging from a waterfall to a long trail through protected areas. Small-scale farmers dedicate their plots to growing aromatic plants. Essential oil is extracted from citronella leaves by distillation; this production in particular is part of the town’s history and identity. This provides a concrete cultural connection alongside the nature themes: citronella links cultivation on the plots with processing its leaves into essential oil.

Two events held in El Soberbio also address nature and river themes. The 6th Fiesta Provincial de la Biodiversidad y el Ecoturismo took place there. The 8th Limpieza Binacional del Río Uruguay was also held in El Soberbio. Their titles alone show the different thematic emphases: biodiversity and ecotourism on the one hand, and the Río Uruguay on the other. These are named events from the town’s history, not information about a future event date.

Another connection with nature is the Reserva de Biósfera Yabotí. It was established by law in 1995, belongs to UNESCO’s MAB (Man and the Biosphere) Programme, and is located in the municipalities of San Pedro and El Soberbio. Its location across two municipalities provides a distinct geographic context for this biosphere reserve. El Soberbio therefore brings together different perspectives: small-scale citronella production as part of the town’s identity, and a protected area with a designated affiliation to a UNESCO programme.

Waterfall or longer trail

Guaviroba Rappel offers guided rappelling down a waterfall in a jungle setting. The activity lasts approximately two to three hours. The approach trail to the waterfall is approximately 400 metres long and has a low difficulty level. For planning purposes, these are two separate details: the approximate duration refers to the activity, while the length and difficulty level describe the approach trail. This makes it possible to consider this offering as an experience with a defined duration, without conflating details about the approach with an assessment of the rappelling.

The Huella Guaraní trail offers a different kind of experience. It covers 60 kilometres, including 32 kilometres through untouched forest, and passes Indigenous villages. It also runs through three protected areas: the Reserva Natural y Cultural de Papel Misionero, the Reserva Guaraní and Caá Yary. The distance details refer to the Huella Guaraní; the approximately 400 metres, by contrast, describe the approach trail to the waterfall at Guaviroba Rappel. If you are weighing up different nature experiences for your trip, you can choose between a guided rappelling experience and a 60-kilometre trail that passes through named protected areas.

Planning your stay

Parque Provincial Saltos del Moconá can be reached from El Soberbio via Ruta Provincial N° 2. If you would like to include the park in your trip, you could consider El Soberbio as a base when searching for a holiday apartment. Another road designation is “Route of Biological Diversity and Cultural Diversity”: this is how Ruta Provincial N° 15 is described. Its name adds a distinct, explicitly named reference to the town’s nature and cultural themes. When choosing, you can therefore focus on the experiences that interest you: access to Parque Provincial Saltos del Moconá, guided rappelling or the Huella Guaraní.

If you would like to explore other destinations: Oberá, Puerto Iguazú, Montecarlo, Posadas, Puerto Bossetti, Apóstoles and Aristóbulo Del Valle.
