Anzoategui tells a story of salt production, firewood and an industrial railway. Estación Anzoátegui is in the southeast of La Pampa Province, within the municipality of La Adela and the Caleu Caleu Department. Together with the salt flats and the settlement, it forms a historical setting in which traces of immigrants can also be seen in the way the area was shaped. This makes the place especially interesting for travellers who want to learn about local history not just through individual buildings, but through the interplay of work, transport and settlement.

A railway station on the salt railway

Estación Anzoátegui belonged to the industrial railway that connected the salt flats in the southeast of La Pampa Province. The associated Bahía Blanca–Zapala section was built by Ferrocarril Sud and dates from 1897. After nationalisation began in 1948, the section was later called Ferrocarril Roca. These dates describe different stages in the railway’s history: 1897 refers to the railway section, while the later name is associated with nationalisation.

The year 1916 is also significant in two different contexts. That year, the company “Fortunato Anzoátegui Limitada - Sociedad Anónima - Salinera, Forestal, Agrícola y Ganadera” began processing and marketing salt and firewood. It is also estimated that Estación Anzoátegui may have been built in 1916. The estimated construction date remains an estimate and should be distinguished from the definitively documented start of the company’s activities.

Station, facilities and settlement

Opposite the station in Anzoátegui are the facilities of the former company. The former station building is unusual compared with the other stations in La Pampa that belonged to Ferrocarril Sud. The railway connection and the former company are therefore among the defining themes of the town’s history. For a visit focused on cultural history, one question to consider is how the industrial connection between the salt flats, the station, the settlement and traces of immigration fits together.

The Salinas de Anzoátegui and Salitral Negro are in the municipality of La Adela. In the southeast of La Pampa Province, vast white plains define the landscape of the salt region. There, visitors can learn about the process of producing table salt and local stories; the destinations mentioned include the Salinas de Anzoátegui and Salitral Negro. Alongside railway history, the landscape and the production of table salt offer distinct points of interest for a trip.

Visits and planning your trip

Visits to the salt flats in La Pampa are on foot and only with authorised guides. This is important when planning a visit: tours must be guided and are not described as independent walks. Those most interested in the industrial past will find the station, the former company and the settlement at the heart of the historical story. Those who want to experience the salt landscape can focus on the salt-flat destinations mentioned and the stories shared there.

When choosing a holiday rental, it is therefore helpful to first decide on the main focus of your stay: railway and local history, or the salt flats and table-salt production. Visits to the salt flats in La Pampa have their own requirements: walking tours with authorised guides. For further inspiration, you can also discover Gaviotas.
