Colón – Thermal Baths, River Beaches and Culture
Accommodation in Colón
Thermal baths, light-coloured sandy beaches on the Uruguay River and a diverse cultural scene give Colón its distinctive character. Here, relaxing hours at the thermal baths can be combined with activities on the water, nature experiences and insights into the history of the colony. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these aspects of the destination you want to shape your stay.
Thermal baths with pools, a water park and a relaxation area
Termas Colón has nine outdoor pools and three covered pools. The thermal baths’ water park adds seven slides to the bathing facilities. For a quieter break, there is an exclusive relaxation area with eight single beds. A visit to the thermal baths therefore includes both a water park and slides, as well as an area for resting. If you are choosing Colón mainly for its thermal baths, you can take this focus into account when planning your trip and choosing accommodation.
The park at Termas Colón also contributes to the character of the place: from there, you can enjoy a view of the Uruguay River and its beaches. The river landscape and the thermal baths are among the features that distinguish Colón alongside its bathing facilities.
Sandy beaches and activities on the Uruguay River
Colón has several kilometres of white sandy beaches along the Uruguay River. The river is used near Colón for kayaking, rowing, windsurfing, sailing, water skiing and swimming. This range of options makes different kinds of holiday days possible: you can see the river as a place for water sports or focus your stay more on the beaches. These activities are different options on the Uruguay River, not one set shared programme.
There is an accessible beach in the northern area. It has showers, a path with parasols alongside the rest areas, amphibious wheelchairs, an accessible toilet and reserved parking spaces for people with disabilities. If you would like to include this beach area in your trip, you can find specific information here about the facilities available.
Nature by the river and excursions beyond Colón
The Reserva Natural de Usos Múltiples “Río de los Pájaros” lies at the mouth of the Arroyo Artalaz where it meets the Uruguay River. The area covers approximately 65 hectares. Its location at the river mouth and its modest size give the reserve a different profile from the beaches and thermal baths. Reserva Sur was designated a nature park and protected landscape in 2000.
Parque Nacional El Palmar can also be included in your plans around Colón: National Route RN 14 leads from the city to the national park’s entrance. If you would like to consider nature destinations in addition to the thermal baths and river, you can include this excursion in your plans.
City history, art and regional experiences
The Museo Histórico Regional de Colón tells the story of the city’s origins and development through objects donated by the community. The museum also hosts visual arts exhibitions and concerts. A visit therefore combines local history with cultural events.
Granja La Administración offers another perspective on the history of the colony: its museum exhibition is about the colony and family life, and visitors can see it on a local guided tour. The rural tourism offering also includes horseback rides. During a visit, country-style snacks made with regional products, craft-brewed beer and homemade bread are available. History, horseback rides and regional produce can therefore be considered as distinct interests for a stay.
In the neighbouring municipality, Molino Forclaz is a National Historic Monument and a provincial museum. A recurring cultural highlight in Colón is the Fiesta Nacional de la Artesanía, which has been held every year in February since 1990.
