Empedrado combines the landscape along the Paraná with an unusual cultural history: red barrancas define the riverbank, while the theatre, a historic casino and local festivals offer insights into community life. You can also choose accommodation to suit your travel interests: would you most like to experience the river landscape, try fishing, or discover cultural sites and traditions?

Barrancas, Beach and the Paraná

The Barrancas de Empedrado are considered the town’s main natural attraction and stretch along a large part of the Paraná riverbank. At Playa Espigón I, broad stretches of sand meet the red barrancas; the beach lies at their foot. It is located within the Camping Municipal “Gerónimo Merello”. This distinctive combination of sand and striking riverbank makes Playa Espigón I a unique landmark in Empedrado’s landscape.

Those interested in sport fishing will find opportunities in Empedrado to fish for surubí, dorado, boga and pacú. Fishing spots in the surrounding area include places near the barrancas, as well as channels and tributaries of the Paraná. This describes different fishing areas along the river without combining them into a single route. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether fishing or the river landscape is one of your main interests.

Seasonal Activities

For the 2026 winter season, a hike along the “Barrancas del Paraná” trail is offered daily at 6:30 p.m. It starts at the Gruta de la Virgen in the campsite. Bicycle rentals are also offered at the Camping Municipal “Gerónimo Merello” every day from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the 2026 winter season. The activities differ in their scheduling: the hike has a fixed daily start time, while bicycle rentals are available over a longer period in the late afternoon and evening. This lets you choose between an activity with a set start time and one with more flexibility when planning your day.

Cultural History and Local Festivals

The Teatro Dora was founded in 1916 and served as a cultural venue for local social and artistic life. Another important site in the history of tourism was the Hotel Casino de la Ciudad de Invierno, which opened in June 1913. The ruins of the Mansión de Invierno were declared part of Empedrado’s historical, cultural, architectural and landscape heritage by municipal ordinance. Together, these places tell different sides of local history: cultural life, tourism development and architectural heritage.

Festivals also offer a glimpse into Empedrado’s traditions. The Fiesta Provincial de los Estudiantes began in 1967; it features parades, performances, the election of a queen and the traditional torch. The second edition of the Fiesta de la Empanada y el Chamamé combined regional cuisine with Chamamé music. If cultural topics interest you alongside nature experiences, these festival traditions offer another way to discover the town.
