Puerto Pirámides is the only town within the Península Valdés Nature Reserve, which is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Coastal landscapes, wildlife watching and small discoveries around town shape a stay here. When choosing a place to stay, this raises a practical question: would you rather head out on the water, explore the town’s history on foot or spend time in the peninsula’s landscapes?

A coastline of cliffs, dunes and beaches

The coast of Puerto Pirámides is undergoing erosion. Its features include active and inactive cliffs, wave-cut platforms, and narrow pebble and sand beaches. Tamarisk trees and dunes frame the beach by the town. Anyone keen to explore the landscape will find a variety of coastal formations here rather than one continuous stretch of beach. This also captures the character of the town: sea, rock and dunes lie side by side.

Whale watching and other experiences on the water

From June to December, boats depart from Puerto Pirámides for whale-watching trips. This timeframe is an important consideration if your travel plans are centered on this experience. Guided walks around town also provide access to special places where southern right whales and sea lions can be observed at close range. Snorkeling trips with sea lions are among the experiences on offer, too.

If you’re interested in the marine ecosystem, there are several activities to choose from. Stand-up paddleboarding offers a way to interpret the ecosystem while taking in the calm, clear waters and varied seabed. Diving is possible year-round, with clear water and fish-rich natural reefs shaping the experience. A boat trip begins with a visit to Cueva de los Fósiles. Sea-kayaking trips include a short trek to ancient fossils. These experiences offer different perspectives, from views of the sea to the discovery of fossil traces.

Getting around on foot and by bike

Four historic and identity-themed walking tours focus on water, rural life, old houses and local institutions. They are designed as self-guided walks; QR codes link to videos, images, historical documents and stories. This lets you explore the themes at your own pace. Another option is the Puerto Pirámides Free Tour, which takes you on foot through the town’s streets and introduces its past, present, stories and landscapes.

Cycling around Puerto Pirámides takes you along routes over dunes and through steppe trails frequented by land animals, all the way to remote beaches. If you’re traveling with children, you can choose activities to do together based on your family’s interests, such as a tour of the town, a bike ride or an experience on the water. For an excursion nearby, Salina Chica is about 40 km away. A path leads to the shore; signs provide information about its history, and marked circular trails range in difficulty.

Choosing a place to stay that suits your travel interests

Puerto Pirámides is accessible via Provincial Route No. 2, which leads onto the peninsula from National Route No. 3. When choosing a holiday rental in Puerto Pirámides, consider whether the activities in town and the whale-watching boats departing from there fit your travel plans. The distance to Salina Chica is another point to consider when planning excursions nearby. In the surrounding area, Punta Pirámide has an accessible path, park rangers and public restrooms.

Local cuisine and views

The cuisine in Puerto Pirámides features fresh regional seafood and other local marine products. VAYAMOS DE PICNIC combines a different perspective on the landscape with local treats: the experience takes you to a viewpoint on a cliff several million years old, overlooking the Golfo Nuevo, and includes homemade local delicacies. So, in addition to active excursions, coastal views and food can be travel interests in their own right.
