Valley, River and Viewpoints

El Maitén lies in a broad valley of glacial origin, crossed by the Río Chubut and surrounded by mid-range mountains. The river and mountain ranges frame the landscape; Cerro de la Cruz offers a specific trekking destination for views of the town. From the top, the panorama stretches across El Maitén. If you would like to take nature and exercise into account when planning your trip, you can make this viewpoint one of your main focuses.

The ascent from the “Grutita” to Cerro de la Cruz is marked by paths and signs relating to the Stations of the Cross. Another viewpoint awaits you at Cerro La Cruz: the mountain is 1,377 metres high, and from its two viewpoints you can see the difference between Andean forest and steppe. Together, these details show different aspects of the landscape: views of El Maitén and the contrast between two vegetation zones. This can help you weigh your interests in scenery and nature more precisely when planning your trip.

La Trochita and Railway History

The railway is also part of El Maitén’s character. The workshops and railway museum of the Viejo Expreso Patagónico – La Trochita – house preserved locomotives and carriages. Maintenance work is carried out in the workshops, and replacement parts are custom-made. The railway focus therefore covers both the vehicles and the work involved in preserving them. The “Grutita” also features several railway details typical of El Maitén.

A train excursion runs from El Maitén station to the Ingeniero Bruno Thomae stop and back to El Maitén. It lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes. On board, the trip includes a guide and a dining car serving coffee and homemade pastries. The stated duration gives you a concrete reference point for planning your day; you can treat the excursion as a separate activity alongside a visit to the town’s railway sites.

Festivals and Experiences on the Río Chubut

Since 1983, the Fiesta Nacional del Tren a Vapor has been held in El Maitén every February. The festival includes a food promenade and live performances. This cultural experience complements the town’s railway attractions with food and a stage programme. If you are interested in local events, February is the month associated with this festival.

Visitors can enjoy water sports on the Río Chubut and fish for rainbow trout and salmon. The river offers different ways to spend time by the water, from water sports to fishing. Nearby, at Aldea Escolar Buenos Aires Chico, is the entrance to the Cañadón, 5 km from El Maitén. A clear stream flows through the Cañadón, a gorge between lengas, coihues, ñires and cypress trees. The valley, river and gorge represent different kinds of natural scenery that may play a role in choosing what you would like to experience on your trip.

Another striking feature is the Bella Durmiente rock formation. It resembles a woman at rest and is considered a typical image of El Maitén.

Other places: Epuyén, Gualjaina, Golondrinas, Lago Puelo, Leleque.
