Península Valdés showcases Patagonia’s remarkable diversity: the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés covers 887,775 hectares of steppe, plains and plateaus. It also includes the Golfo San José and Golfo Nuevo, whose Ramsar wetlands provide feeding and resting grounds for resident and migratory birds. The landscape and wildlife are an integral part of the travel experience here.

Steppe, sea and protected habitats

Península Valdés is part of a biosphere reserve that also includes the protected areas of Punta Loma and Punta León. UNESCO describes the peninsula as an area of global importance for the conservation of marine mammals. It is home to breeding populations of endangered Southern right whales, as well as significant breeding populations of southern elephant seals and South American sea lions. Magellanic penguins breed at Caleta Valdés from late September to mid-April; at the southern tip of the inlet is Punta Cantor Reserve, with a colony of southern elephant seals.

Punta Loma also brings together different experiences: the protected area has an elevated viewpoint overlooking the Golfo Nuevo and a permanent colony of South American sea lions. If you are especially interested in habitats and species conservation, there are several specific themes to consider when choosing your travel dates and preferred excursions.

Seasonal wildlife watching

Orcas can be spotted seasonally at Punta Norte, especially in March and April. There, they deliberately beach themselves to hunt sea lion pups. Orcas can be spotted seasonally at Caleta Valdés in October and November, when southern elephant seal pups are present. The time periods and species involved differ, so when planning your trip, it is worth focusing on the wildlife you want to see rather than treating the months as interchangeable.

El Doradillo offers a different viewing window: whales can be watched from shore in this nature reserve from June to October. The main access route to El Doradillo is Provincial Route No. 42. The Caleta Valdés visitor facility has accessible paths for people with reduced mobility and accessible toilets. This information applies to the Caleta Valdés visitor facility, not to all locations on the peninsula.

Puerto Pirámides as a base

Puerto Pirámides is the only urban centre within the Área Natural Protegida Península Valdés and serves as a base for trips to the peninsula’s sights. The main visitor activity is whale watching by boat, particularly Southern right whales. Coastal walks, sea lion snorkelling trips and diving experiences are also available year-round; snorkelling and diving with sea lions are among the options. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Biedma, consider whether Puerto Pirámides suits your travel plans as a base or whether you are mainly interested in seasonal wildlife watching at other locations mentioned here.

Puerto Pirámides is accessible via Provincial Route No. 2, which leads into Península Valdés from National Route No. 3. The town also has a distinctive regional cuisine, with dishes such as gratinated scallops, local shellfish and grilled trout.

Explore local attractions and exhibitions

Several interpretation centres complement the natural experiences with insights into the landscape and history. The Istmo Carlos Ameghino Centre has exhibition rooms on geology and geography, the steppe, marine mammals, Southern right whales and history, as well as a renewed interpretation trail within the protected area. The Isla de los Pájaros Interpretation Centre features 3D bird displays, an environmental library and refurbished outdoor walkways. At the Punta Norte Interpretation Centre, you will find orca figures, information boards, reinforced walkways and visitor rest areas.
