Towering Andean peaks, colonial buildings and archaeological collections give Fiambala its distinctive character. The Seismiles Corridor attracts mountaineers, trekking enthusiasts and travelers in four-wheel-drive vehicles; at the same time, the town is part of the Ruta del Adobe and the Ruta de la Fe. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth considering whether you would like to focus your trip more on culture, mountain scenery or experiences in the surrounding area.

Colonial heritage and ancient cultures

Fiambalá is part of the Ruta del Adobe, where centuries-old churches and buildings tell the story of regional identity. One specific historical example is the Comandancia de Armas: it dates from 1745 and preserves authentic colonial architecture. The Capilla de San Pedro is also nearby. Built in 1770, it is considered an outstanding example of colonial cultural heritage. These buildings offer different points of interest if you are interested in the region’s history and architecture.

The Ruta de la Fe offers a different emphasis. As a spiritual route, it invites visitors to embrace silence, contemplation and inner reflection. At the Museo del Hombre, the focus turns to the history of cultures dating back thousands of years. The museum has been dedicated to preserving and presenting them for 27 years and has three archaeological galleries. The objects and artifacts on display tell the story of the Ciénaga, Santamariana, Belén, Sanagasta and Inca cultures. Notable exhibits include two naturally mummified bodies, around 600 years old.

The Seismiles Corridor and Andean scenery

The Seismiles Corridor associated with Fiambalá is in the west of Catamarca Province and falls under Fiambalá’s jurisdiction. It connects the town with the San Francisco international pass. Almost 20 peaks, reaching more than 6,000 meters above sea level, define the corridor. It can be traveled by four-wheel-drive vehicles during the day, with panoramic views of the Cordillera from various stops. This makes the excursion quite different from a stay focused primarily on historical buildings or the museum.

Excursions in the surrounding area

The Termas de Fiambalá are 17 km from the city of Fiambalá. Their 14 pools, made of Cordillera stone, have temperatures ranging from 28 °C to 51 °C. If you would like to experience pools at different temperatures, this offers a different kind of excursion from the mountain routes. The Duna La Ballena is also nearby: it is 2 km from Fiambalá, next to the road to the hot springs, and is considered easy to access.

The Cañón del Indio is another way to experience the Andean landscape on foot. It is reached by a hike several kilometers long, and the route is considered moderately difficult to challenging. Take this into account when planning your day if you are considering the excursion. This way, the surrounding area offers a range of experiences, from a dune described as easy to access to a longer, more challenging hike.

Local tradition and a suitable base for your trip

The town’s character also includes a wine-making tradition. At Bodega Tizac, locals and tourists can take part in the Cosecha de Luna Llena: during this nighttime grape harvest, they cut grapes by moonlight and bring them to the winery at midnight, accompanied by music and dancing. This offers a distinct cultural highlight alongside the architecture, museum and mountain scenery.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use these differences as a guide: should your trip focus mainly on the colonial buildings and collections at the Museo del Hombre, or would you prefer to give more weight to the Seismiles Corridor and excursions in the surrounding area? Fiambalá’s offerings range from historic sites and a museum to a mountain route that can be traveled during the day, thermal pools and hikes. Other places to discover include La Puntilla and La Estancia.
