Fátima: Local History and Culture
Accommodation in Fátima
Fátima combines a distinctive local history with a cultural centre and a range of cultural connections. Golf is also one of the themes that can shape a stay. If you are planning a trip, it helps to consider what you want to focus on: would you like to explore the town’s history and art, or make golf the main focus?
A name with a history
In 1959, the town was named “Fátima” in honour of the Virgin Mary. Before that, it had been called “Estación Empalme”. This earlier name points to the town’s history around the railway station: Estación Fátima was part of the General Urquiza Railway. The town’s history therefore features different names, each with its own connection to the past.
A historic post office stood a few metres from the railway station and a wide, unpaved road. At the time, the road was known as “de los troperos” or “nuevo”. San Martín and the Grenadiers used it on their way to the San Lorenzo Monastery. The station, post office and road are specific historic sites; the recorded connection to the monastery is part of the history of this route. As you explore Fátima, these names and connections can provide a starting point for learning more about the town’s past.
Art and culture in Fátima
The Arte en las Fábricas cultural centre is located in Fátima, Partido de Pilar, and is directed by artist Alejandro Marmo. Marmo created the project of the same name in the mid-1990s, with the aim of turning industrial remnants from abandoned factories in Greater Buenos Aires into sculptures. This idea puts the transformation of existing materials at its heart. Anyone interested in art and culture will find a special connection here to Marmo’s work and the project.
The cultural centre opened with the group exhibition “Cultura en obra”. It featured painting, music and sculpture, as well as a short theatre performance by the Solara group. The exhibition brought these different art forms together in its programme. The Arte en las Fábricas complex is also home to Barrousel, described as Fátima’s first cultural bar. It is located at the intersection of Río Grande and Quirno Costa. This gives your trip a cultural focus with specific names, places and art forms.
Golf and the Pilar Golf complex
Pilar Golf has a 27-hole golf course designed by The Ronald Fream Plan Design Group Ltd. of the United States. The complex is also home to the headquarters of the Asociación Argentina de Golf and the BlueDotPutt golf academy. If golf is an important part of your trip, you will find several clearly identified features here: the course, the association’s headquarters and the academy.
The complex also includes lagoons and groves of trees. So, in addition to the golf course, the grounds feature other landscape elements. When choosing a holiday rental in Fátima, your trip’s main focus can be a useful starting point.
Getting around and other activities
Puerto Pilar is located at Avenida Doctor Arturo Frondizi 3899 in Fátima. Public transport includes a route known as “Ramal 7 Km 61 Fatima”. It runs via Pte. Frondizi, Calle 4, Calle 9, Calle 24 and Calle 12. These names give you specific points of reference for getting around locally.
One activity reference with a specific date comes from 2019: at the time, a paragliding school operating at Puerto Pilar in Fátima offered tandem flights and courses. The two options cater to different ways of experiencing paragliding and add another aspect of the town’s more recent history to its cultural and golf-related themes.
