Mocorito: Plaza Traditions and Culture
Accommodation in Mocorito
Plazuela Miguel Hidalgo is the setting for the weekly “Viernes de Plaza” and a place steeped in history. In Mocorito, this lively event is complemented by cultural and historical attractions: the Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción in the historic center, murals at the Casa de la Cultura, and collections at the Museo de Historia Regional. For travel planning, it is also helpful to distinguish between the main town and the municipality as a whole.
Friday Program at the Plazuela
“Viernes de Plaza” takes place every Friday at Plazuela Miguel Hidalgo and is for residents of the main town as well as people from nearby settlements and rancherías. The program includes lottery games, handicrafts, traditional sweets, ice cream, and traditional pastries from Mocorito. It also features street performances by students and the launching of Cantoya balloons. Music groups or bands perform Sinaloan music at the kiosk; there are also food stalls serving typical snacks, along with seating.
If you are planning your visit around the Friday program, check the date in advance. Plazuela Miguel Hidalgo began as a military plaza and was once a cemetery. The tourist photo spot with the Mocorito lettering is also located at Plazuela Municipal Miguel Hidalgo; its design may change.
Architecture, Art, and History
The Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción is in the heart of Mocorito’s historic center. It may be the former Jesuit mission of San Miguel Arcángel, completed in 1594. The Casa de la Cultura in Mocorito features traditional 19th-century architecture. Inside, Alonso Enríquez’s mural “Mocorito a través de los siglos” covers the interior walls in their entirety. It is divided into four sections: “Mocorito Antiguo,” “La Ilustración,” “El Mundo Moderno,” and “Mocorito rumbo al 2000.”
Bronze sculptures of Eustaquio Buelna, Rafael Buelna Tenorio, and Agustina Ramírez stand at Plaza Cívica de los 3 Grandes de Mocorito. Casa de las Diligencias is a house built in the late 19th century that served as an arrival point and stop for stagecoaches along the Camino Real. The church, sculptures, and history of stagecoach travel each offer a different focus for a cultural stay. The Museo de Historia Regional preserves paleontological and archaeological remains from the region, including mammoth bones, stone tools, and clay objects.
The Fiesta de la Purísima Concepción is celebrated on December 8 at the municipality level in Mocorito. It brings together residents of Mocorito and surrounding communities, as well as visitors from the region; the program may change.
Regional Cuisine and the Municipality
Sugarcane candy has been made at the mills of the El Valle sindicatura for approximately 200 years. El Valle is outside the main town, in the municipality of Mocorito. This makes it possible to distinguish this artisanal tradition from the sweets and pastries featured in the “Viernes de Plaza” program.
The municipality of Mocorito also encompasses more than the main town in terms of landscape: tropical savanna lies to the west, mountainous terrain to the east, and a transition zone in the central area. Conifers, oaks, and pines grow in the high mountains; on the mountain slopes, species include Amapas, Ébanos, cedars, and Sabinos. The coastal zone is home to herbs, shrubs, and mangroves, as well as Guamúchiles, mesquites, and wild-growing figs.
When searching for a vacation rental, this distinction can help you decide what to focus on for your trip: the places, buildings, and Friday program mentioned above are in the main town, while the climate regions and plant life describe the municipality of Mocorito on a broader scale.
