Choix: Mission History, Crafts and Riverside Recreation

History and Crafts in Choix
Choix can be discovered through its history, crafts and diverse cultural impressions. Its historic center was founded in 1607 by a Jesuit mission led by Padre Don Cristóbal de Villalta.
At the Museo Reloj Mirador, you can encounter different forms of craftsmanship: ceramics, woodworking, leatherwork and palm crafts are on display, made by artisans from the Municipio Choix. The variety of materials and crafts offers a tangible glimpse into local handicrafts. The museum is also dedicated to José Ángel Espinoza Aragón, known as “Ferrusquilla.” He was from Choix and was an actor and singer. Photographs, trophies and other memorabilia give this part of the museum its own focus.
The Museo Reloj Mirador also has a tower offering views over the area around Choix. It is about 17 meters tall and has five floors as well as an observation vestibule. Alongside the collections on display, it offers another perspective on the town: you can explore crafts and memorabilia inside the museum, then look out over the surroundings from above. The approximate height and five floors give the tower a distinct architectural profile.
Mission History and Collections
The Templo de San Ignacio de Loyola dates from the beginning of the 17th century. It originated as the former Mission San Ignacio de Choix and was restored in the 19th century. The church of San Ignacio de Choix is also described by its architectural form: today, it has a single-nave interior and a Latin cross floor plan. Those interested in church architecture can find both the history of the mission and a specific architectural form to focus on. The dates given place its construction and restoration in time, while the nave and floor plan describe its present-day layout.
A small museum in the Casa de la Cultura offers another perspective on the history of Municipio Choix. It displays objects and exhibits related to the municipality’s history. Among them is the fossilized vertebra of a prehistoric animal—an unusual item in the collection. The Casa de la Cultura also offers various art workshops. Historical exhibits and artistic activities are both at the heart of the venue.
The Casa Museo Avelina Uzarraga has a different collecting focus. It features a private collection of photographs from the region, antiques and other unusual objects. Unlike the small museum on the history of the municipality, the focus here is on a private collection spanning different groups of objects. If you enjoy comparing different types of collections, you can consider these impressions alongside the exhibits at the Casa de la Cultura and Museo Reloj Mirador.
