Tlachichuca: Church Festival and High-Altitude Landscape

Tlachichuca offers two distinct highlights for planning your trip: the parish church and the annual festival in town, and the high-altitude landscape of Parque Nacional Pico de Orizaba, which also extends across the municipality of Tlachichuca. Churches, Festival Day, and Historic Buildings

The Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción was completed in 1651 and is listed in Tlachichuca as a historic, artistic, and colonial building. A festival honoring the Virgin is held at the church every year on December 8. This fixed date gives culture enthusiasts a specific point of reference for planning their trip.

In the Centro are Rancho La Flor and the Templo de San Antonio; both are listed as historic, artistic, and colonial buildings. Such buildings can also be found in the municipality: the Ex Hacienda de Quetzalapa is located on the road to Guadalupe Victoria. The road to Guadalupe Victoria and San José are cited as the location of Hacienda San José Capilla. The Ex Hacienda de Santa Inés is also among the municipality’s listed buildings.

Another religious landmark is in La Ermita: a framed image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is located there, about one kilometer from the municipal seat of Tlachichuca. High-Altitude Landscape in the Municipality

Parque Nacional Pico de Orizaba extends into the state of Puebla, including the municipality of Tlachichuca. Its landscapes include high-altitude grasslands, coniferous forests with pines, firs, and ash trees, as well as Quercus forests with oaks and conifers. Hartweg’s pine is found there at elevations above 4,200 meters.

A waterfall is another landscape feature in the park: it is located near the Las Lagunillas area, by Miguel Hidalgo, in the municipality of Tlachichuca. Planning Activities and Routes

Mountaineering is possible in Parque Nacional Pico de Orizaba from January through May, and hiking is possible year-round. The two activities therefore have quite different seasons. Weather and park restrictions can change; check the latest information about access and conditions before setting out.

The northern route to the national park begins 20 kilometers from Tlachichuca; check access and road conditions again before setting out. There is also accommodation for mountaineers at Citlaltépetl, about seven kilometers from the municipal seat. The route there follows unpaved roads and tracks. CONANP lists Tlachichuca as one of the towns where tourist services for Parque Nacional Pico de Orizaba can be commissioned. Before your trip, check whether a suitable option is available.

For additional directions within the municipality: from Ciudad Serdán, follow the road via the turnoff toward Tlachichuca on the Serdán–Guadalupe Victoria route. At the municipal seat, the access road to San Miguel Zoapan branches off. These route details supplement the activity information, but do not replace checking access conditions before setting out.
