Zacapoaxtla: Mountain Scenery, Church History and Bread

Zacapoaxtla is located in the northeastern Sierra of Puebla. Church and Local History

The Conjunto de la Parroquia Lateranense de San Pedro Apóstol is located at José Sixto Verduzco 4 in the Centro of Zacapoaxtla. It is a religious building complex. Its full name refers to the Parroquia Lateranense de San Pedro Apóstol, which is also associated with several historical points of reference in the town.

Remains of the town’s first chapel, built in the 16th century, were discovered in the parish church. On June 8, 2023, the Secretaría de Cultura also reported a glyph carved in stone that was found in the church and is linked to the area’s pre-Hispanic settlement. In 1798, the church was granted parish status and took the name Parroquia Lateranense de San Pedro Apóstol. The chapel, archaeological find and parish status offer different points of connection to the town’s history.

Another specific cultural site is the Museo Comunitario Xolalpancalli, located at Plaza de la Constitución in Zacapoaxtla’s Centro Histórico. The church’s address in the Centro and the museum’s location in the square offer two place names to help you plan a stay focused on cultural history.

Bread and Cultural Events

The Corredor Gastronómico de Panaderos is located on José Sixto Verduzco. When it opened in November 2024, visitors could sample traditional breads such as pan de muerto, hojaldras, calabazas and pan rojo. The breads were made with local ingredients and traditional recipes. If you would like to visit the corridor, check in advance whether it is currently operating.

Cultural events are also associated with specific months: January is linked to the Monumental Rosca de Reyes, and March to the Festival del Artesano. Three events are associated with April: Festival de la “torta de camarón”, Callejoneada Zacapoaxtla and Festival de “Medicina Tradicional”. July is linked to the Festival del “Tayoyo Ranchero”, August to the Festival del “Chile en Nogada”, September to the Festival de la “Independencia” and October to the Desfile de Calaveras. November is associated with the Festival “La fiesta de la vida”, and December with the Festival “Una Navidad Mágica”.
