Abasolo: Peralta, History and Traditions

Peralta: Buildings, Architecture and Reasons to Visit

The Peralta Archaeological Zone lies east of the municipality of Abasolo. Its 20 buildings stretch from the summit of the hill of the same name to lower-lying areas near the river. The site includes six of the eight distinct forms of hill and sunken-courtyard architecture. Visitors interested in archaeological architecture can see various building types within a single, connected site.

The two excavated and restored buildings, La Mesita and El Divisadero, are considered suitable for public visits. Check the latest access information before visiting. Getting there is another practical point to plan for: an asphalt road leads east from Abasolo; the route to the archaeological zone via the rancherías of San Isidro, La Peña and Rancho Seco is 13 kilometres. A municipal report from March 2025 describes visits to the Peralta Archaeological Zone at the equinox as an annual tradition and mentions that hundreds of visitors are expected. History in Central Abasolo

The Parish of Our Lady of Light is the main church in the municipality of Abasolo; it was built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A municipal report from December 2024 describes El Nacimiento Viviente as a tradition in Abasolo: near Christmas, families visit the living Nativity scene set up in the church atrium, where various groups portray scenes from biblical history. The performance connects the season with a story told through several scenes.

The Miguel Hidalgo Museum is also located in the centre. It houses the only certified replica of the baptismal font in which Miguel Hidalgo was baptised and preserves archaeological pieces from Peralta and La Mina. These date from 300 to 900 AD. The museum thus brings into focus both Hidalgo’s baptism and finds from two archaeological zones. It also preserves and promotes the historical heritage of the municipality of Abasolo.

Two important monuments honouring Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Father of the Nation, stand in the historic centre. The sculpture of Don Miguel Hidalgo was installed in December 1960 on Plaza Constitución. The stele known as the Estela de la Libertad is one of 262 Cabezas de Águila in Mexico and marks an important point on the Ruta de Hidalgo. This route marks the beginning of the struggle for independence from 1810 to 1811; the stele is in Abasolo because Miguel Hidalgo was baptised here.

The Parish of Our Lady of Light was also the setting for the unveiling of the first commemorative plaque on the Historic Route of the Cristero War. The unveiling took place as part of the centenary of the Cristero War; a municipal announcement about it is dated 12 August 2026. A report dated 8 May 2026 on the opening of the 50th Semana Cultural de Abasolo mentions artistic performances, music and a tribute to the community’s talent.

Traditions, Cuisine and Leisure

A municipal report from 2024 describes the Traditional Cuisine Fair at the Peralta Archaeological Zone. A variety of traditional dishes were prepared there, with women cooks preserving recipes passed down through generations. Alongside the archaeological buildings, the account also highlights the passing down of culinary traditions.
