Lumby: Salmon Trail and Village Stories

The Salmon Trail: Waterways and Paths

The Salmon Trail runs along Bessette and Duteau Creeks. These waterways are the easternmost spawning areas for Pacific coho and Chinook salmon. The trail focuses on this specific natural feature and connects it with the surroundings of Lumby. It consists of three paths linked by roads in the downtown area.

From June to August, the Lumby Visitor Centre offers free guided tours of the Salmon Trail with student guides. The walks are 1 to 8 km long, follow flat terrain and are accessible to wheelchairs, strollers and bicycles. Water Activities at Oval Park

Lumby’s outdoor pool is open for public swimming and measures 25 m; it has five lanes. It also offers swimming lessons and fitness programs. Program times may change, so check the current schedule if you’re planning to take a lesson or join a particular fitness program.

Lumby Spray Park is located right next to the outdoor pool in Oval Park. It is open all summer, from Victoria Day to Labour Day; check its hours before your visit. The pool and spray park therefore differ clearly in their offerings and season: the outdoor pool offers lanes, lessons and fitness programs, among other things, while the spray park is a separate seasonal attraction in the same park.

Museum and Murals

The Lumby & District Museum collects, preserves and exhibits artifacts and materials of significance to the Village of Lumby and the surrounding rural areas. It is open seasonally from June to September, Wednesday to Saturday, from 12:00 to 15:00. As these hours are seasonal, check them again before your visit.

Another way to get to know Lumby is to take a walking tour of more than 30 murals on the theme “small is beautiful.” The images depict the historic village, agriculture, wildlife and prominent members of the community. While the museum collects artifacts and materials from Lumby and its rural surroundings, the walking tour brings these themes to life in murals around town.

Market and Early Summer Dates

The Lumby Public Market runs from the second week of May to the second week of October. It features local growers, producers, food vendors, artisans and craftspeople, performers, and local home-based businesses. Vendor participation may change seasonally. Those interested in local produce, crafts and community offerings will find a different focus here than on the trails or at the museum.

The Lumby Days Family Festival takes place annually in early June; the dates may vary from year to year. Early June therefore falls during the Public Market season, which starts in the second week of May.
