Moyogalpa’s ferry port is the main gateway to Ometepe Island; visitors arrive here daily from various places. The port and town provide a practical starting point for getting to know the island through its point of arrival, nature and farms. When choosing a vacation rental, consider whether you would like to prioritize the port, excursions in the surrounding area or insights into rural work.

The port as a point of arrival and orientation

The Muelle de Moyogalpa is an L-shaped reinforced-concrete pier that extends about 40 meters into the water from the lakeshore. Two adjoining structures accommodate larger vessels, including ferries. The port is also a practical point of reference for visitors arriving daily from various places.

The Fuente de los dos volcanes is located within the port complex: a large, true-to-scale replica of Ometepe Island surrounded by water. It stands in the roundabout on the southern approach to the pier. The ferry port also has taxis, mototaxis, hotels, hostels, restaurants and small shops that serve tourists directly. You can take these visitor services at the port into account when choosing where to stay if you are looking for a vacation rental in Moyogalpa.

Nature and activities in the surrounding area

Near Moyogalpa is Punta Jesús María, also known as Punta de la Paloma. When the water level falls, the sand there forms a road-like spit in the lake. In the surrounding area, you can go for walks, observe vegetation and wildlife, picnic, swim and camp. Nature watching and activities by the water thus offer different options alongside experiences around the port.

Farms and insights into everyday life

Finca María Andrea is located in the community of La Concepción, near Moyogalpa. Visitors can learn about daily farm work and the cultivation of plantains, staple grains, vegetables, legumes, coffee and ornamental plants alongside farmers. The variety of crops makes the farm a destination for anyone interested in agricultural work and different cultivated plants.

Finca Samaria is located in the community of Los Ángeles, in the area around Moyogalpa. Visitors can milk cows, make their own cheese, tour the farm and enjoy the beach. The two farms therefore offer different insights: María Andrea focuses on farmers and crop cultivation, while Samaria combines activities involving cows and cheese with a farm tour and the beach. This difference can help you choose an excursion based on your interests.

Architecture and cultural traces

The town also has a distinctive architectural character: some wooden hacienda-style homes in Moyogalpa feature vernacular architecture influenced by early 20th-century North American architecture. In the municipality of Moyogalpa, Doña Azucena Guillén’s house is described as the oldest in the municipality. It has two stories, was built more than 75 years ago and retains its original all-wood construction in its entirety.

The port, spit, farms and architectural heritage offer different focal points for a stay. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether to prioritize the arrival point and visitor services at the port or nature and farm activities in the surrounding area.
