Nyaung U: Pagoda, Morning Market and Regional Culture
Accommodation in Nyaung U
Nyaung U has two very different points of interest: the Shwezigon Pagoda on the outskirts of town and the local morning market in the centre. The surrounding area also offers cultural traditions and a nearby lake. This gives you a mix of architecture, local market character and regional themes to consider when planning your trip.
Pagoda and Festival Throughout the Year
On the outskirts of Nyaung-U stands the Shwezigon Pagoda, a massive cylindrical structure on three square terraces. If you are interested in architecture, you can compare its different forms: the cylindrical structure and the square terraces. The pagoda is interesting for its specific design, not just its name.
An annual festival is associated with the pagoda. It takes place in the ninth month of the Burmese calendar, in December, and attracts thousands of worshippers each year. The timing differs from that of the market: the market is most active in the morning, while the festival is an annual event in December. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current dates in advance.
A Local Morning Market in the Centre
Mani Sithu Market is located in the centre of Nyaung-U. It is a permanent local market and primarily a morning market, not one mainly geared towards tourists. This is what defines its character: it is a local market, not a market focused on tourist offerings. If you are interested in local markets, you can take this distinction into account when planning your trip.
There is also a tourist information desk in the area in front of the market, called “Bagan- Nyaung Oo Market counter”. The market therefore combines its local character with a named point of reference directly outside the grounds.
Culture and Destinations in the Wider Area
The village of Set-Set-Yo lies in the wider region. Village tourism there began in 2017; travellers from around the world were interested, among other things, in the Youngpaysu hairstyle as part of the cultural heritage. Villagers have worn this hairstyle for hundreds of years. Two different time perspectives therefore sit side by side: the start of village tourism in 2017 and a much older cultural tradition.
A lake lies nearby on Thet Soe Mountain, south of Tuyintaung Pagoda. A 2021 report describes two routes to the lake: from Tuyintaung Pagoda and via Tuyintaung monastery road. If you would like to include the lake in your travel plans, check current access options in advance.
Choosing the Right Location for Your Holiday Apartment
When looking for a holiday apartment, the two locations offer a clear comparison: Mani Sithu Market is in the centre, while Shwezigon Pagoda is on the outskirts of Nyaung-U. Consider which location better suits your plans, and choose your accommodation accordingly. If you are also interested in the tradition in Set-Set-Yo or the nearby lake, these may also inform your travel plans.
