Discover Täby: Culture, Trails and Nature Experiences
Täby combines impressive cultural history with walking trails, natural areas and a wide range of leisure activities. Between medieval church art, rune stones, wetlands and bathing beaches, holiday days can take on entirely different focuses. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Täby can therefore plan their trip according to their own interests: with historical discoveries, active trails, nature observation or shared activities with children.
Experience church art and Swedish history
An important starting point for visitors interested in culture is Täby kyrka. The church dates from the mid-13th century and is known for its well-preserved lime paintings, created by Albertus Pictor in the 1480s. The best-known motif among the Täby paintings, “Dödens schackspel”, is located in the western vault. The church therefore offers a tangible insight into Sweden’s medieval imagery.
Runriket also brings the region’s history to life. The entrance is at Jarlabankes bro, just north of Täby kyrka. Runriket comprises a total of nine sites around Vallentunasjön and stretches over a distance of 3.5 Swedish miles. There is also an outdoor exhibition at Jarlabankes bro. In the wider regional area, information boards at all nine sites provide information about the history of each location as well as runes and rune stones. Visitors can listen to additional information on their mobile phones in Swedish and English.
Other cultural attractions offer different points of focus. Täby’s main library houses the permanent exhibition “T Täbys historia – från forntid till nutid”, which shows how people have lived in Täby over time and brings together history and cultural heritage for all age groups. Karby gård is an art and cultural centre whose main building hosts several art exhibitions every year. The local history museum of Rönninge by is housed in a 19th-century barn. Ensta krog opened in the 1680s on the post road between Stockholm and Åbo and was a central location for more than 125 years.
Trails for walks and historical discoveries
For a manageable hike, the Forn- och naturstigen near Täby prästgård and Skogberga is a good choice. The three-kilometre trail starts in Täby kyrkby and passes a Viking Age burial ground. A digital guide for it is available in the Upptäck Historien app. Stolpaleden is around three kilometres long and has 14 information posts. Both trails combine exercise with specific historical themes, without limiting the outing to a purely museum-based experience.
There is also a roughly 1.3-kilometre trail through easy terrain at Ensta krog. Public transport buses stop at the Ensta krog stop on Stockholmsvägen. In winter, ski trails are prepared there on the five- and ten-kilometre exercise tracks when snow conditions permit. This allows you to adapt your plans to the season and your preferred schedule for the day.
Nature, water and active holiday days
The wetlands at Mörtsjön and Käringsjön are among the municipality’s most valuable habitats for plants and animals. The Skavlöten recreation area is located in the Rönninge by-Skavlöten nature reserve at the northern end of Rönningesjön. There is a bathing beach with a shoreline and jetties there. Täby also has 30 kilometres of riding trails.
Täby offers further options for families with different interests. The Trafiklekplatsen in Centralparken is a half-scale road environment where visitors can practise their knowledge of traffic rules by bicycle or kick scooter. A larger, weather-protected pergola and table-and-bench combinations invite visitors to rest, enjoy fika and have picnics there. Next to Åva Upper Secondary School is an 800-square-metre skate park for skateboarding, kickboarding and inline skating for all age groups. The facility includes a dedicated track with obstacles for kick scooter riders and an area exclusively for skateboarding and inline skating; beginners and experienced riders are welcome.
At Hägernäsbadet on Värtan, there is a barbecue area, a car park, a toilet, a playground and a beach volleyball court. At Rösjöbadet, you can go cold-water swimming in Täby. When choosing your holiday apartment or holiday house, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred travel focus: church art and regional history, walking trails and runes, nature and water, or active leisure activities.
