Holiday apartment in Täby: Church, runes and nature
Between medieval church art, lakeside scenery and paths through natural and cultural history, Täby reveals very different sides. Täby Church dates from the mid-13th century. Its Stigluckor and bell tower, like the church itself, are protected ecclesiastical cultural monuments and are subject to Chapter 4 of the Swedish Cultural Heritage Act. The best-known motif among the Täby paintings, the “Game of Death”, is located in the western vault.
Culture
Täby Local Heritage Museum in Rönninge by is housed in a former 19th-century granary building. It conveys an impression of life and everyday life in earlier Täby and features, among other things, a small classroom, a kitchen, a dressmaker’s workshop, a shoemaker’s workshop and a joiner’s workshop. In Täby Main Library, the permanent exhibition “Täby’s history – from ancient times to the present” presents the local cultural heritage and encourages visitors to explore places of cultural-historical significance in the municipality.
Karby Gård is an art and cultural centre. Several art exhibitions are held in the main building every year, which also houses a printmaking studio. A café serves pastries and light meals.
Nature
Rönninge by lies in a small-scale, cultivated valley east of Rönningesjön. Landforms characteristic of a rift-valley landscape shape the area and give it varied topography. The Skavlöten recreational area is located in the Rönninge by–Skavlöten Nature Reserve at the northern end of Rönningesjön. There is a bathing area with a beach and bathing jetties. The exercise trail system includes illuminated routes of 1.25, 2.5 and 5 kilometres starting at the recreation centre, as well as a 10-kilometre route.
Rönninge by has been restored as a publicly accessible demonstration farm site. In a car-free environment, visitors can experience older ways of life and traditions from the period before agriculture was modernised after the Second World War. When the ice is thick enough, an approximately five-kilometre ice-skating track is prepared on Rönningesjön.
Trails
The three-kilometre forest and nature trail near Täby prästgård runs through the Täby prästgård Nature Reserve and an area of national interest for cultural heritage. Along the trail are traces of human activity from the Bronze Age to the present day, as well as a Viking Age burial ground. Stolpaleden is an approximately three-kilometre trail through the natural and cultural history of Stolpaskogen; 14 information boards stand along the route.
The Ensta krog recreation centre borders directly on Stolpaskogen and offers walking and exercise trails, fire pits, a wind shelter, a playground and an outdoor gym. Buses stop at the Ensta krog stop on Stockholmsvägen. It is also possible to take the Roslagsbanan to Ensta station.
Sjöslingan is an approximately six-kilometre, blue-marked circular trail. It passes wetlands and a Natura 2000 site and runs alongside a prepared picnic area at Käringsjön. In the direction of Ullnasjön, there is a system of boardwalks allowing visitors to walk through the wetlands without getting their feet wet. At regular intervals, small boardwalk platforms with seating and signs describe the surroundings with haiku by Tomas Tranströmer. Naturkartan is an outdoor guide for the web and mobile devices that helps with navigation to trails, barbecue areas and other natural attractions in Täby.
History
In Runriket around Vallentunasjön, rune stones and runic inscriptions can be discovered at around nine different locations. Jarlabankes bro is a 150-metre-long and 6.5-metre-wide causeway that was probably built in the 1050s. At its northern end stand two stones with runic inscriptions. From Jarlabankes bro, you can go around the lake and then continue by bicycle, car or bus into Runriket.
Runriket has an open-air exhibition, an adventure park and a reconstruction of the Viking Age monument Jarlabankes bro. The various sites visibly bring together preserved inscriptions, paths along the water, exhibitions and a reconstructed historic complex.
