Järna combines varied trails, protected landscapes and an unusual cultural scene. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment as a base can choose between short walks, longer hikes, historic churches and special places such as James Turrell’s Skyspace. The experiences are not all located in one single place: Järna, Ytterjärna and the wider surrounding area offer different reasons to plan a trip with both active and more relaxed days.

Hiking between the lake, gorge and Baltic Sea landscape

One notable trail is the 14 km-long Kustleden. It runs between the Farstanäs Nature Reserve and Skillebyholm and passes, among other places, Pilkrogsviken, Ytterjärna Church and the Kulturcentrum. This makes it possible to combine a hike with several different impressions. The Farstanäs Nature Reserve also has three marked walking trails: Strandstigen at 2.7 km, Skogsstigen at 3.5 km and Paradisstigen at 2.3 km.

For a shorter outing, Logsjön in the northeast of Järna is a good option. The nature area close to town can be reached on foot from Järna railway station in about 500 m. The Logsjörundan has benches for resting as well as boardwalks and paved sections; at the same time, parts of the route pass through wet and muddy stretches. In the Moraån Valley Nature Reserve, nature borders directly on the southern edge of the built-up area. There, a flat, blue-marked trail of about 4.3 km runs past several benches for resting. A yellow-marked trail follows the gorge for 2.2 km. Information boards explain the flora, fauna and cultural heritage, while maps provide orientation along the trails.

Those who prefer longer routes can consider the approximately 13 km-long Ekoleden. It connects Ytterjärna with gardens, agricultural land, forests and the Baltic Sea coastal area. The Nibblerundan, by contrast, is a marked circular trail of 2 km that takes approximately 30 minutes. The Moraån Nature Reserve features rainforest-like nature and adds another distinctive landscape element.

Cultural sites with their own character

In Järna, the Överjärna Church, built in the 12th century, stands at the centre of the town. In Ytterjärna, architecture featuring organic shapes, natural materials, light and colour defines the surroundings. Kulturhuset i Ytterjärna was inaugurated in 1992 and offers a rich programme of events. Its good acoustics make it a suitable concert hall. Tickets can be booked online around the clock or purchased at the box office one hour before events or during reception opening hours.

Skyspace is a special experience: a light installation designed by James Turrell, featuring a white dome open to the sky. From 30 minutes before sunset until 60 to 90 minutes afterwards, visitors can observe changing colours in the sky there. This time information is important when planning your day if you want to combine a walk or cultural event with a visit. The Kulturhuset also houses the KulturMat restaurant and café, which is open Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00.

Which base suits your trip?

If you want to combine short nature walks with travelling by train, the area around Järna and Logsjön is a natural choice. For culture, longer hikes and the special surroundings of Ytterjärna, accommodation in the wider area around this district may better suit your planned daily rhythm. There are good cycle paths between Järna railway station and Ytterjärna. The Stensta bus stop is also located on the Kustleden, 600 m from the reception of Ytterjärna Kulturcentrum.

The surrounding area also offers further destinations: In the Yttereneby Nature Reserve, a natural bathing spot at the headland known as Kärleksudden can be reached by bus. There are also two equipped barbecue areas with woodsheds and seating. Skillebyholm offers full-time and part-time training in horticulture and cultivation, as well as shorter courses. The Nibble Handelsträdgård shop mainly stocks the farms’ own products and a selection of wholesale goods.

When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore first decide whether walking trails and proximity to the railway station, the cultural sites in Ytterjärna or varied excursions in the surrounding area should be the main focus.
