Holiday apartment in Södertälje: Coast, culture and nature

Södertälje lies where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. Waterways, coastal landscapes and cultural sites come together here to create a place with many different facets. Södertälje has 24 nature reserves. There are also paths along the coast, historic sites, museums and special places such as Oaxen and Ytterjärna.

Water, paths and nature

Kustleden runs along the coast through varied landscapes with open forests, shore meadows shaped by grazing, rocky areas and viewpoints overlooking the fjärds. A different type of landscape can be found at Lina lersjö: The restored bird lake provides a habitat for amphibians, including larger and smaller newts, as well as many species of dragonflies.

Sörmlandsleden runs along two parallel routes through Södertälje Municipality. A northern route leads between Grödinge and Gnesta, while a southern route follows the municipality’s eastern boundary via Mörkö. Around Farstanäs, there are several fishing spots where you can fish year-round without a fishing licence.

The grounds of Tullgarn Palace include a formal 18th-century garden, a picturesque English park, ponds and bridges. There is also a bay lined with shallow beaches and home to a rich variety of birdlife.

Experiences and paths

The outdoor area at Tom Tits Experiment includes cycling on a high-wire course, gold panning, a plant maze and various water experiments. The Torekällberget open-air museum in central Södertälje illustrates what life was like in 19th-century Sörmland through its historic houses and farmsteads. The museum also includes recreated gardens with period-typical plants; the enclosures are home to animals of traditional Swedish landraces.

Bus 751 runs from the bus stop at the commuter rail station up to Torekällberget. The tourist information office in Södertälje Municipality provides maps, brochures and event tickets.

History and culture

Wendela Hebbes hus was the summer residence of journalist and writer Wendela Hebbe from 1863 to 1888. The museum at Wendela Hebbes hus tells visitors about Wendela Hebbe and her daughter Signe Hebbe and shows that both made important pioneering contributions to Swedish cultural life.

Kulturhuset i Ytterjärna is a cultural centre with a varied programme and a concert hall. Oaxen is home to a preserved lime kiln, which is one of the listed historic buildings in Södertälje Municipality.

Marcus Wallenberg Hall is privately owned but open to the public. Its exhibitions provide information about Scania and the company’s vision for sustainable transport, connectivity and the environment.

Kanalmuseet is a signposted walking route along the western side of the Södertälje Canal. From the lock via Wendela Hebbes hus to Gamla Flickskolan, nine information boards use text and images to describe features and surroundings along the canal.
