Discover Nykvarn: Lakes, Trails and Culture

Nykvarn combines a lake landscape, hiking trails and a remarkable cultural and industrial history. Anyone looking for an apartment or holiday home in Nykvarn can tailor their stay to their preferred travel theme: active days on land or water, historical discoveries, winter activities or excursions combining different interests in one travel group.

Hiking trails between lake and forest

There are various routes to choose from for walks and longer hikes. Turingeleden is 3.8 kilometres long and runs along the southern shore of Lake Turingen. Hälsans stig in Nykvarn is approximately 7 kilometres long. Anyone wishing to plan a longer hike can reach the connecting section of Sörmlandsleden: it begins about 100 metres west of Nykvarn railway station. The illuminated Elljusspår trail is 4.5 kilometres long and partly hilly.

The surrounding area also offers clear landscape landmarks. Vackstaskogen lies on the outskirts of Nykvarn; Lake Vällingen is located to the south and Långsjön to the north. Jägarskogen Nature Reserve lies on the northern shore of Lake Yngern, not far from Nykvarn tätort.

Waterways, cycling tours and winter experiences

A special way to experience the landscape is offered by the 27-kilometre Åkers Styckebruk–Nykvarn canoe route. It begins in Åkers Bergslag in Strängnäs Municipality and leads via Visnaren, the Marviken lakes, Klämmingen, Stora and Lilla Kvarnsjön and Gullsmorasjön to Lake Yngern. The route is considered easy to paddle and includes seven portages; the longest is 700 metres. When planning a trip, it is therefore important to consider not only the length of the water route but also the number and length of the portages.

Anyone wishing to explore Nykvarn by bicycle can plan a tour from the centre to Taxinge Castle and back via the suggested diversion. This route is approximately 28 kilometres long. At Alcrofältet, the length of the cross-country ski trails varies between 3 and 8 kilometres depending on snow conditions. In winter, Hökmossbadet also has a jetty for cold-water bathing with a device to protect the ice hole. Lådbilslandet includes the Jordbrukslandet area, with tractors and agricultural machinery in miniature form.

Churches, runestone and industrial history

Turinge kyrka provides access to the area's older history. Its oldest part dates from the 12th century. The church includes a funerary chapel that Erik Dahlbergh designed and had built for himself and his family at the end of the 17th century; it is considered one of Sweden's more outstanding Baroque monuments. In the vestibule there is an 11th-century runestone with one of the longest inscriptions in Södermanland. Nykvarnskyrkan is located in the centre of Nykvarn and was built in 1974.

At the Smedsbygget local history museum, you can learn more about the historic parishes of Turinge and Taxinge. The local history also includes iron processing at Nykvarns bruk, which was expanded and improved in the 17th century. The place name Nykvarn derives from the “New Mill” built at the waterfall of Turingeån east of the present manor house; a forge for processing the refined iron was also established there. The industrial buildings and workers' housing of the new paper mill from the second half of the 19th century, together with older houses from the period of iron production, form an industrial bruk environment. The older workers' housing along Bruksgatan forms a well-preserved, cohesive group of buildings.
