Holiday apartment in Nykvarn – Hiking, lakes and culture
The Turingeleden makes Nykvarn tangible through a short, clearly described nature experience: The orange-marked hiking trail is 3.8 km long and runs along the southern shore of Lake Turingen in Nykvarn.
Nature
The Jägarskogen nature reserve on the northern shore of Yngern also combines marked circular trails with additional facilities by the water: There is a bathing area, a lakeside barbecue area and a wind shelter. The entire loop is 3 km long, with a 1.5 km section suitable for prams. The western “Strandstigen” measures around 0.7 km. The stated purpose of the reserve is to preserve and further develop a varied forest with high natural values and great importance for local recreation.
Lake Yngern itself is deep, large and highly irregular in shape, offering numerous fishing spots. In the wider natural area lies the Björkviksmossen nature reserve in Nykvarn Municipality, which has been protected since 1996 and covers 15 hectares. Björkviksmossen is a small pine bog surrounded by coniferous forest that appears close to its natural state, and is home to species worthy of protection that are listed on the Red List.
Hiking and waterways
The connecting section of the Sörmlandsleden begins about 100 metres west of Nykvarn station. It leads through old forest to northern Yngern and reaches Sandtorpsbadet after about 6 km. This provides a clearly designated connection for switching between short trails and a longer route, without mixing up its individual sections.
On the water, the 27 km-long Åkers Styckebruk–Nykvarn canoe route runs via Visnaren, the Marviken lakes, Klämmingen, Stora and Lilla Kvarnsjön, and Gullsmorasjön to Lake Yngern. The route is easy to paddle and includes seven portages; the longest is 700 metres.
Culture and history
Turinge kyrka dates back to the 12th century in its oldest section. Inside is a burial chapel designed by Erik Dahlbergh, considered one of Sweden’s more significant Baroque monuments. The vestibule also contains a 10th-century runestone with one of the longest inscriptions in Södermanland.
The present main building of Taxinge Slott was constructed between 1806 and 1813 and has not undergone any major changes since then. The castle includes a café with around 65 varieties of home-baked pastries. Coffee is served in the library or, in suitable weather, in the park.
Smedsbygget is a local heritage museum in a former residence for the works’ smiths and features exhibitions on local history. In the centre of Nykvarn lies Folkets park, a 100-year-old retro attraction with a rotunda, refreshments, and space for mini-golf, boules and other activities. A monument in Nykvarn is dedicated to the former estates of the person concerned and was erected on their 300th birthday.
Experiences for different days
Lådbilslandet in Nykvarn is presented as a full-day family experience with activities and experiences for children aged 3 to 9. Alongside nature trails, lakes and historic sites, this provides an explicitly designated offering for this age group in the local area.
