Kyrkbacken brings together a harbor landscape, a distinctive church history, and the protected natural area of Backafallen. Three themes are especially easy to explore: S:t Ibbs kyrka at the top of Kyrkbacken, the harbor with its sandy beach and piers, and the steep slopes between Kyrkbacken and Bäckviken. You can plan your stay around whether you are more interested in medieval history, a day at the beach, or protected nature.

History and Church

The old S:t Ibbs kyrka dates from the 13th century and stands at the top of Kyrkbacken. Its oldest part was built during the medieval herring fishing and trade in the Öresund; its builders included merchants, fishermen, and farmers. The church thus connects a specific place with the history of fishing and trade in the Öresund. Its significance also extends to the present day: S:t Ibbs kyrka is the only one of the two churches on Ven that is still in use. Its construction period and present-day use stand side by side, giving the place two perspectives in time. The contrast between its medieval origins and its use today makes the church a distinct historical theme alongside the harbor.

Backafallen: Protected Nature

The landscape also has its own protection status. The steep slopes of Backafallen between Kyrkbacken and Bäckviken are protected as a nature reserve to preserve the diversity of plant and animal life. The focus here is on preserving habitats, while the church and harbor offer other themes. If you plan to visit Backafallen, check the local access rules in advance.

Harbor: Swimming and Culture

At the harbor, water and culture come together. There is a sandy beach for swimming, and the piers are there year-round. The Hamnmuseum displays the photo exhibition “Fisket och människor i Kyrkbacken” in a neighboring Hodda. The exhibition title refers to fishing and people in Kyrkbacken; there are also 13 films about the history of the harbor associated with the Hamnmuseum. The photo exhibition and films offer different perspectives: one focuses on people and fishing, the other on the history of the harbor. Exhibition information may change seasonally; check before your visit to see whether the photo exhibition is on display.

Getting There and Choosing a Holiday Apartment

Some boats can call at Kyrkbacken on the other side of the island of Ven. If you plan to arrive there, check the timetable for your specific trip. When looking for a holiday apartment, the mix of water, culture, and nature you want can influence your choice of location. The harbor offers direct access to swimming; the church is a clear point of interest for medieval history, while Backafallen is the focus for nature. Consider which of these themes will matter most during your stay, and shape your search around the experiences in Kyrkbacken that interest you most.
