Balkö: Lake, local history and old paths
Accommodation in Balkö
Balkö’s local history brings together a lake, a relocated house and old paths. The Nöttja Ryaskog nature reserve also lies south of the village. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, these features can help you decide whether landscape and history are the themes you want to shape your trip.
Nöttja Ryaskog and Lake Balkö
The 2.1-hectare Nöttja Ryaskog nature reserve lies south of Balkö in the municipality of Ljungby. Its clearly specified location and area make it a distinct natural feature in the surrounding area.
Lake Balkö was probably the reason the village came into being. Three holdings, each with a quarter mantal, were grouped towards the lake. Lake Balkö thus appears both as a possible focal point in the village’s origins and in the recorded arrangement of the holdings.
A change to the lake is also part of local history: as several small lakes were lowered or completely drained, Lake Balkö became an unhealthy mud puddle. This local historical account links the lake to a marked change in the landscape of the waterways.
A house and a family history
In 1879, all eight children left the house in Balkö with their parents and moved to the USA. Those who left included Ken Johnson’s grandmother, her siblings and her parents.
The former site of the house was a grassy area; it was moved as part of the land reorganisation (laga skifte). The change in the house’s location is therefore also part of its history.
Balkö is also associated with a slag site, 80 metres east of a residential house. This adds another specific point of interest to the local history.
Historic paths and directions
A route from Balkö was part of the historic network of church paths. The church path led via Brödraberg, Nöttja ängar and Nöttja Södergård to the church in Nöttja. The sequence of named places makes the historic route tangible and shows Balkö as part of a network of paths leading to the church in Nöttja.
An official road overview from 2023 lists Road 526 from Rya via Balkö to Extorp. This offers a different kind of orientation from the historic church-path network: here the focus is on the sequence of roads, while the historic route runs through several named intermediate places.
Ideas for planning your trip
When planning a trip with a holiday apartment, you can weigh up Balkö’s landscape and history. The nature reserve and Lake Balkö give the landscape a central role; the house’s history, emigration and church path highlight the village’s development and historic connections. Which aspect interests you more can give your choice of destination a clear direction.
