Fishing waters in Sörbygden have different methods and seasonal windows. Fishing is possible all year round at Hemsjön and Åstjärnen, while specific periods apply to other waters. When planning a trip, you can therefore consider the type of fishing and your travel dates together. The surrounding region also offers a variety of natural landscapes, from the unmodified forest river Gimån to the deciduous-forest-rich Kroktjärnen Nature Reserve.

Forest, river and lakes in the surrounding region

In the wider region around Sörbygden, Gimån is an unmodified forest river. It has several lakes that are suitable for families to fish with a float or by trolling. This offers a different approach to fishing than the waters in the Sörbygden Fisheries Conservation Area, which have their own seasonal and equipment requirements.

The Kroktjärnen Nature Reserve, also in the wider region, consists mostly of deciduous forest. Beavers live in the southern parts of the reserve. To get to the nature reserve, continue south from Sörbygden on Road 320.

Fishing: waters, seasons and methods

The Gimån rapids – Lillströmmen/Båthällaströmmen are part of the Sörbygden Fisheries Conservation Area. Fly-fishing is permitted there from 1 June to 1 September, using a fly rod and barbless hooks. Fish species in these waters include grayling, brown trout, pike, perch, ide, roach, whitefish and burbot. The set season and equipment requirements distinguish this stretch from waters where fishing is allowed year-round.

Lake Hemsjön is also part of the Sörbygden Fisheries Conservation Area. Fishing is permitted there all year round with a rod for spinning or bottom fishing. Fish species include perch, roach, pike, whitefish, burbot, bleak and ide. Fishing is also permitted at Åstjärnen all year round, but only with a rod fitted with no more than three hooks.

Konsttjärnen is a put-and-take lake in the fisheries conservation area. The fish species listed for this lake are Arctic char, brown trout and rainbow trout. Fishing is permitted from the first Saturday in January to 31 August, using a rod fitted with no more than three hooks. Both the season and permitted equipment therefore differ from the options at Hemsjön.

Comparing the options can help you choose when to travel: Hemsjön and Åstjärnen offer the year-round opportunities described above, while limited seasons apply at Konsttjärnen and the rapids. The method also varies from one place to another. Check the current fishing rules and access conditions before your trip; pay particular attention to the periods at waters with seasonal restrictions.

Other activities and places to eat

Snowmobile trails are also worth considering when planning a trip to the region. Skogsåkarna Albacken-Sörbygden is one of the clubs that maintains the approximately 600-kilometre snowmobile trail network in Bräcke Municipality and can offer tips on suitable routes. The stated distance refers to the municipal trail network; route suggestions provide another way to plan beyond the waters.

For places to eat in the Bräcke area, Fredsberg in Sörbygden is one option. This adds a specific name to the nature and fishing information without limiting trip planning to a single activity.

Choose a holiday home to suit your travel plans

If you are looking for a holiday home in Sörbygden, your travel dates and preferred type of fishing can be useful starting points. If you are specifically interested in fly-fishing, consider the period from 1 June to 1 September and the requirements at the Gimån rapids – Lillströmmen/Båthällaströmmen. Other options include the year-round opportunities at Hemsjön and Åstjärnen or the limited season at Konsttjärnen. Families can also consider fishing with a float or trolling in the lakes around Gimån. This makes it possible to plan your stay around the waters and activities that matter most to you.
