Bräcke: Holiday apartment amid hiking trails, water and culture

Bräcke presents Jämtland through its trails and waterways: the approximately 7 km-long Forsaleden can be hiked from either end. This alone makes it possible to experience the trail from different directions without losing sight of its approximate length.

Nature and trails

Forsaleden follows the Forsaån through partly rocky terrain, across bridges and wooden walkways. Waterfalls, rapids and dams lie along the trail, keeping its route closely connected to the forest river.

Helvetesbrännan is an extensive natural area. The area covers 3,385 hectares and is both a nature reserve and a Natura 2000 site. Almost 1,000 hectares lie in Jämtland County; the protected area also extends across Bräcke Municipality.

Helvetesbrännan has approximately 20 km of hiking trails, five overnight huts and several wind shelters. Both marked trail sections and basic shelter facilities are therefore part of the character of this natural area.

Kunskapsleden runs for approximately 6 km through the forest landscape along the Gimån. Information boards address local natural and cultural values, and there are also several wind shelters along the route. The approximately 5 km-long Kroktjärnsleden leads to Kroktjärn, with a rest area and a wind shelter. There is a viewpoint above the treetops near the lake.

Kullaleden also ends at a viewpoint, from where the view extends far across Gimdalen and its surroundings. Two stages of the S:t Olavsleden pass through Bräcke Municipality, complementing the longer trail connections with a pilgrimage route known far beyond the region.

Water and fishing

Lake Revsundssjön offers various activities on and around the ice, including canoeing, boat trips, cross-country skiing on the ice and ice fishing.

The Gimån is an unobstructed forest river and is particularly known for grayling fishing. Its northern section is considered one of Jämtland's best trout waters, with early summer especially highlighted. The different fish species and the seasonal context are each specific characteristics of the river.

Culture and local produce

The Alma also brings a piece of Swedish maritime history to the water. The passenger steamboat was built in 1873 and is one of Sweden's oldest passenger steamboats still in operation.

Sundinsgården was built in 1890 and is now very well preserved. Tours can be booked. A winery offers a different insight into regional history and the present day, producing juices, Jämtland raisins, jam, its own wine and mead from raw materials sourced from Jämtland's natural environment. Visits are possible by calling in advance.

In summers when there are kids at the farm, visitors can take part in a goat walk with a picnic basket in the goat enclosure. The farm shop next to a dairy sells cow's and goat's cheese in a variety of flavours and shapes.

Winter and getting there

In Kälarne, the Svedjebacken facility has a warming hut, a cafeteria and ski rental. For the Mickelbacken ski area, a rail park, a big jump and a skicross course were recorded in 2022; the opening of these facilities was announced for 26 March 2022. This timing remains significant when considering winter sports.

There are several public transport connections within the municipality. Norrtåg stops at four locations in Bräcke Municipality: Pilgrimstad, Gällö, Stavre and Bräcke. Bus route 127 runs between Bräcke and Östersund, while other routes connect additional locations within the municipality.
