Varberg combines coast, history and distinctive places within a compact narrative setting: the fortress above the Kattegat, long sandy beaches in Apelviken, historic bathhouse culture and the World Heritage Site of Grimeton give the city very different sides. Culture and History

Varberg Fortress is an important symbol of the history of Varberg and all of Halland. The first known building on the fortress hill was a stone castle, completed around 1300. The Halland Museum of Cultural History is located in the castle courtyard and can be accessed through it. Its most important attraction is the Bocksten Man. The Borgen exhibition complements the historical content with a medieval-inspired world of play.

Tours of Varberg Fortress include winding spiral staircases, dark cannon rooms and views over the Kattegat. Another cultural focal point is Grimeton. It is home to the world's last complete and operational Alexanderson long-wave transmitter. Grimeton Radio Station was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. Tours vividly and comprehensively convey the history, people and technology of this World Heritage Site; in late summer and autumn, the “Day Shift” tour is available on Saturdays.

Coast and Water

Apelviken has long stretches of sandy beaches and offers windsurfing and beach volleyball. A new section of the beachfront promenades connects Apelviken with the centre of Varberg and makes it easier to reach the bay on foot or by bicycle. Along the beachfront promenades, swimming is possible both from bathing jetties and from the beach.

Today's Kallbadhuset shows a unique connection between the sea and history. It dates from 1903 and is the third cold bathhouse at this location. All year round, it is possible to swim in the sea and then enjoy a sauna with a view of the Kattegat. Even those who do not want to swim can enjoy the architecture, the sea and the view of the fortress over a fika.

Exercise and Nature

Subbeleden is described as the southern extension of the beachfront promenades. Åkullaleden is approximately 25 kilometres long and begins within the urban area of Varberg.

Badhuset Pingvinen is located in the Håsten leisure area. Its swimming facilities include a 50-metre pool. Under one roof, there is also a swimming pool, an ice rink, a gym and a café. The nearby Naturum Getterön provides information about animals and nature and specialises particularly in birds.
