Holiday apartment in Fjärås: Hiking, Lake and Culture

Fjärås Bräcka is a glacial marginal formation that rises 60 metres above the Halland coastal plain. From there, the view extends westwards across the sea, forests and fields, and eastwards across Lake Lygnern and the surrounding natural landscape. In the Fjärås Bräcka nature reserve, there are several trails where visitors can experience the ridge, its natural environment and archaeological remains.

Nature

Naturum Fjärås Bräcka explains the formation of the ridge, its plant and animal life, and cultural-historical traces in the landscape. The visitor centre has an exhibition, a café and a shop. Hikers can refill their water bottles there; toilets are also available. Naturum Fjärås Bräcka has been adapted for wheelchair users. The connection to Sverigeleden is also part of the area's character: The cycle route runs through the nature reserve and past Naturum Fjärås Bräcka. The Bräckaskolan bus stop is located immediately north of the nature reserve.

At the Fjärås Bräcka beach bathing area, there are two barbecue sites with a year-round supply of firewood. There are two more barbecue sites by Naturum, for which visitors must bring their own wood. Two paths lead from Fjärås Bräcka to the beach: one via a staircase and one via a steep slope farther away.

Hiking and Cycling

The Älvsåker–Naturum Fjärås Bräcka section of the Hallandsleden enters the Fjärås Bräcka nature reserve after passing the church in Fjärås. Another hiking trail passes the Li burial ground and continues to Svalhögen, from where both a lake and the sea can be seen at the same time. The Li burial ground near Fjärås Bräcka is Halland's largest burial ground from the Viking Age and includes more than 100 standing stones.

At Brattabjär, south of Hjälm in the municipality of Fjärås, there are 11 Bronze Age burial mounds and an Iron Age burial ground with more than 45 graves. Brattabjär is most easily reached via the orange-marked Hallandsleden from the parking bay on Rossaredsvägen south of Hjälm. For cyclists, Lygnern Runt is also part of the annual calendar: The 50-kilometre cycling race starts in Fjärås, circles Lake Lygnern and returns to Fjärås.

Culture and History

Tjolöholm Castle, built between 1898 and 1904, is open for visits; guided tours or self-guided visits are available. Tjolöholm Castle is a particularly striking Swedish example of an estate in the Arts and Crafts style. The garden combines formal garden rooms with a more open park landscape. The village of Tjolöholm lies between fields and coastal meadows and was built in the national romantic style.

The Fjärås Hembygdsgille Museum displays everyday objects used by earlier generations. Group tours of the museum can be arranged through a board member of the association. The Gamla Förlandavägen also runs along the ridge of Fjärås Bräcka and has origins dating from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The Limmahögarna are Bronze Age burial mounds; of the original three, only one is well preserved. In 1834, 48 people who had died of cholera in Fjärås were buried in the cemetery on Fjärås Bräcka.

The Äskhults by cultural reserve offers themed tours led by villagers portrayed as maids or farmhands. The cultural heritage therefore ranges from preserved traces in the landscape and historic roads to exhibitions and staged tours.

Lake and Landscape

Lake Lygnern, Halland's largest lake, can be enjoyed for swimming at the beach near Fjärås Bräcka. ISA af Lygnern offers summer boat experiences on Lake Lygnern; one of the meeting points is the pier in Fjärås. Historically, the steamer ISA operated on Lake Lygnern between Sätila and Fjärås from 1889 to 1924.
