Ockelbo: Gardens, Nature and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Ockelbo
Ockelbo brings together a range of attractions: a modern garden park in a forest clearing, viewpoints and hiking trails at Rönnåsen, and architectural and industrial history. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether nature, garden culture or historic sites should shape your stay. These priorities can also help guide your choice of holiday rental.
Garden Park and Roses
Wij Trädgårdar is a modern garden park in a forest clearing in Ockelbo. Around 250 different shrub and park roses grow in the rose garden. The wide variety of roses makes the garden a destination in its own right for anyone interested in plants and landscaped gardens. Together with the forest clearing, it offers a different experience from the viewpoints and hiking trails at Rönnåsen: here, garden culture and the many varieties of roses take centre stage.
Rönnåsen: Views and Trails
The summit of Rönnåsen is about 8 kilometres from the centre of Ockelbo and 270 metres above sea level. From the top, the view extends across large parts of northern Gästrikland. Rönnåsen has the child-friendly Mullestigen trail, from which a path leads to an accessible viewpoint at a field of clapper stones. Important for planning: the accessibility information applies to the viewpoint.
There are also opportunities to exercise at and around Rönnåsen, with fitness trails and hiking paths. Another option is the Gästriketriangeln hiking trail, which connects Rönnåsen, Åmot and Jädraås. The trails therefore differ mainly in their stated purpose: Mullestigen is a named path on Rönnåsen, while Gästriketriangeln links several places. If you are choosing between a viewpoint, exercise and a hiking route, you can use these differences as a starting point for planning your day.
Architectural and Industrial History
Ockelbo Church has a rich architectural history. The large stone church, built in the 1790s, burned down in 1904. Its surviving walls were used during reconstruction from 1906 to 1908. The fire and reconstruction are therefore an integral part of the church’s history.
Wij valsverk offers another distinctive experience: it is a unique industrial museum. An ironworks was established at Wij Manor in 1797, where pig iron from the Åbron blast furnace was processed. The details bring the ironworking process of the time to life: the pig iron came from the blast furnace, and the smithy on the estate was where it was further processed.
Oklagård is an enclosed cultural heritage farm built using log construction, illustrating the development of log-building techniques over more than 1,000 years. A different historic form can be seen at Ödmårdens Stavkyrka in Norrbo, Ockelbo: it is a reconstructed early medieval wooden temple above a deep grey-stone crypt. The crypt contains a spring whose water flows north. Visitors interested in architectural styles can therefore explore log-building, a wooden temple and the rebuilt stone church as different aspects of architectural history.
Moose and Harvest Festival
Visitors can see moose up close at the Älgparken in Ockelbo. This offers a distinct connection with nature and wildlife alongside the trails and viewpoints at Rönnåsen. The harvest festival is held at Wij Trädgårdar every year on 5 September from 11 am to 3 pm. Local produce, food, cut flowers and vegetables are available. As this is a seasonal event, check the specific event dates before planning your trip around it.
