The Gästrikeleden trail runs through Ockelbo and offers several beautiful sections. The town thus combines a clearly designated hiking route with landscapes, bodies of water and historic sites that reveal themselves in different ways.
Nature and trails
Rönnåsen is designated as a popular local recreation area and excursion destination. The summit is approximately 270 metres above sea level and offers views across a large part of northern Gästrikland. Rönnåsen is also home to the child-friendly Mullestigen nature trail, which draws attention to animals and nature with small figures and puzzles.
The Gästriketriangeln can be hiked in Ockelbo and connects Rönnåsen, Åmot and Jädraås. Its individual sections are each 1.5 to 2 Swedish miles long; in total, the route covers approximately 5.3 Swedish miles. There is also a dedicated offering for cycling: Biking Gästrikland has developed a mountain biking trail network in the Ockelbo region.
Bodies of water and family attractions
Ockelbo has 226 lakes and ponds covering an area of more than one hectare. A fishing permit is required for fishing in all of Ockelbo's waters. A centrally located bathing area is near the train and bus services, as well as amenities and shops.
Wij Trädgårdar combines a garden, park and activities for different age groups. The lively park features roses, summer flowers and lush vegetable plantings; Wij Trädgårdar also includes a restaurant and a summer café. The children's garden, Barnens Trädgård, consists of Pettson's kitchen and carpenter's workshop for playing, as well as Findus' fishing pond. The park area also has a comfortable, child-friendly beach.
The Älgparken in Ockelbo offers guided tours. Free parking is available at the entrance to Älgparken.
Culture and history
Today's Ockelbo Church was originally built in 1791–1793 and rebuilt in 1906–1908 after a fire, using the surviving walls. Its chancel mosaic consists of 300,000 mosaic tiles and covers 35 square metres. Another historical trace leads to Wij valsverk, which is now a unique industrial museum. Wij valsverk was part of Ockelboverken, the most successful ironworks enterprise in Gästrikland in the 18th century.
Crafts and living tradition
Oklagård combines a newly built early medieval stave church with an open-air museum on grounds shaped by historic Swedish and medieval settings. The open-air museum includes a small museum of wooden tools and an exhibition about wood joints. Oklagård offers guided tours and study visits with pre-ordered coffee and pastries, as well as folk music. Medieval events, storytelling and forest music also take place in its authentic historic setting.
Pålsgården is a local heritage farm on Lustigbacken overlooking Lake Bysjön. The Ockelbo Hembygdsförening offers guided tours on request and has a collection of 58 textile printing blocks, as well as tools from the calico printing workshop of dyer Hallberg in Ockelbo in the 1850s.
