Johannishus: Nature, Culture and Historic Routes

Johannishus combines a distinctive landscape with an unusually large number of historical traces. The village lies on Johannishusåsen, a glacial esker extending through the landscape. Landscape and Regional Features

The Johannishus åsar nature reserve illustrates the character of the landscape particularly well. The pasture landscape includes large oak trees and numerous archaeological remains. The area can be reached from the E22 via Listerby towards Johannishus. There is a car park south of Hjortsberga Church.

Johannishus Gods is also part of the village’s distinctive profile. The farm shop sells game meat from its own lands, beef and lamb from organic farming, as well as a small selection of local food and handicraft products. This may be of interest to travellers who would like to get to know regional products during their stay or supplement their accommodation’s provisions with local purchases.

Castle, Churches and Historical Discoveries

Johannishus Castle and its associated buildings form an unusually well-preserved grand bourgeois ensemble from the 18th century. A two-storey building in the castle complex was designed in the Neoclassical style in 1772. However, Johannishus Castle and its park are not open to visitors. The complex is therefore a historical point of reference in the village, but not a regular visitor attraction with an accessible castle park.

Another focal point is Hjortsberga Church. The oldest parts were built in the first half of the 13th century; at the same time, the church is considered one of the oldest and best-preserved churches in Blekinge. The Johannishus Kyrkrundan route passes a church and a cemetery and includes historical information points. The easy circular trail runs mainly along gravel paths and wooden bridges, while a short section follows asphalt. Those travelling with different interests can thus combine a walk with historical impressions without devoting the entire day exclusively to one building.

The historical surroundings also include Björketorpsstenen. Its runic inscription dates from the second half of the 7th century AD. The runestone is flanked by two tall, upright stones which, together with it, form a triangle. The registered burial ground L1979:5242 comprises approximately 110 archaeological monuments and broadens the perspective on the area’s long history of settlement and culture.

Trails, Bus Connections and Suitable Starting Points

For planning without your own car, bus route 255 is a useful point of reference: among other places, it stops in Ålycke, the starting point for the Johannishus Kyrkrundan. The nearest bus stop to the southern end of the Johannishus åsar nature reserve, Tvingsvägen Ronneby, is approximately 300 metres away. You should take this approximate figure into account when planning your own day.

Johannishus Gods is also part of ARK56, a network of interconnected coastal trails in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The exhibition hall at Johannishus Gods hosts various art exhibitions and events throughout the year, meaning that contemporary cultural offerings, alongside historical themes, are also part of the area’s attractions.
