Senija: Museu Obert, History and Trails

Cultural and Religious Sites

The present-day Santa Caterina church in Senija dates from the 18th century and was built on the site of an old Arab mosque. It houses a Baroque polychrome wooden sculpture of La Mare de Déu dels Desemparats and also preserves an image of La Mare de Déu de La Misericòrdia from the 14th century that came from the former church. The Mare de Déu Negreta chapel was built in 1965 and is located in the La Cometa district of Senija.

History and Festivals

The L’Arc Gòtic is a pointed Gothic brick arch. It most probably dates from the period when Senija was elevated to a Moorish vicarage dependent on Benissa in 1535 and established as an independent parish in 1569.

The residents of Senija were mainly engaged in producing raisins and growing grapes for export. The patron-saint festivals in honour of the Virgen de los Desamparados and Santa Catalina Màrtir are celebrated on the first weekend of May.

Walks and Landscape

The “Senija. Va de sentits” walking route is 1.09 kilometres long and has a low level of technical difficulty. At each station, it uses information boards with QR codes providing interactive historical information.

The La Creu de Senija route leads to a cross at an altitude of 405 metres and offers panoramic views across the entire Gorgos basin to its mouth at the foot of Montgó. The PR-CV 53.5 Camí dels Morterets runs past valuable built heritage and old terraced fields along the slopes.

The Cova de la Garganta can be reached from Senija via the Camí dels Murtalets towards Les Bassetes; the path leads to a summit with the iron cross Creu Alta. The cave is not very deep, has a horizontal extent of 50 metres, and is catalogued as a rock shelter.
