Discover Sax: Castillo, culture and hiking trails
Accommodation in Sax
Castillo de Sax provides Sax with a striking landmark: it rises on a limestone ridge on the right bank of the Vinalopó River, 500 metres above sea level, and includes a single-storey Almohad tower from the 12th century.
The Ayuntamiento de Sax organises guided and unguided tours of Castillo de Sax. The two formats therefore differ in how the visit is arranged: in the guided tour, the organised tour takes centre stage, while in the unguided tour, visitors explore the building independently.
When comparing holiday apartments in Sax, you can check the travel dates, room category and cancellation policies on the respective offer pages and place the information side by side for your travel planning. These three fields provide different points of comparison within the accommodation offers.
Nature and trails
The Paraje Natural Municipal Ladera del Castillo de Sax was designated a protected natural area of the Comunitat Valenciana by a decision of the Consell dated 11 April 2008. The area offers views over the Vinalopó Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges.
In the El Plano recreation area, a short path leads up a small hill to a viewpoint with expansive panoramic views. The PRV-144 hiking trail also begins at the El Plano recreation area and is signposted as far as l’Avaiol.
The short PRV-25 Elda–Salinas–Elda hiking trail runs partly through the area of Sax. The Ruta de los Sentidos Infantil is a self-guided circular walk through Sax with educational interactive panels, each containing two QR codes. For your daily planning, these types of trails and the walk can be compared according to their route and character.
Culture and history
The historic centre of Sax has Arab origins; its streets nestle against the rock and follow the contours of the land. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 1530s.
Colonia Santa Eulalia is an agricultural colony built in the final decade of the 19th century. The Centro de Estudios y Archivo Municipal Alberto Sols opened in September 2007 in the scientist Alberto Sols’s birthplace and is a venue for gatherings, conferences, lectures, exhibitions and concerts.
The Teatro Cervantes opened in 1888.
