Culture and history
The Iglesia dedicada a San Miguel Arcángel is located on Plaza de la Libertad. Casa Lo Meca dates from the late 18th century, is arranged around a central courtyard and separates the owners’ rooms from those of the people working on the estate. As a typical farmhouse of the dryland region, Casa Lo Meca also has a wine cellar and an olive oil mill. San Miguel de Salinas has archaeological remains from various successive cultures, including the Iberian, Roman and Arab cultures. The Molino de la Tía Pelá is classified as a Bien de Relevancia Local; only its millstones remain.
Landscape and nature
A dense Aleppo pine landscape surrounds San Miguel de Salinas, along with scrubland and areas covered with thyme. The Sierra Escalona landscape and its surroundings were designated a protected landscape in 2018. Wildlife in the natural surroundings includes red-legged partridges, turtle doves, eagle owls, common buzzards, wood pigeons, weasels, rabbits and foxes.
Trails and viewpoints
The Ruta Miradores del Balcón de la Costa leads to viewpoints offering unique landscape views over the Vega Baja. As a cycling tour, the V Circular a Rebate passes over the Rebate mountain pass. Another route is called San Miguel pueblo de cuentos: it invites visitors to look for fairy-tale characters hidden in the façades of houses and buildings, and can be undertaken with family or friends in any order they choose. San Miguel de Salinas is included as a municipality in the official Ruta 15: De Orihuela a Elx; this route is themed around “salt flats, dunes and monumental cities”. The Molino de Viento del Marqués is a cylindrical stone structure in an elevated location, from which the windmill offers sweeping views.

Local cuisine
The 4th “Somos Campo de Salinas” culinary festival takes place in San Miguel de Salinas from 2 to 16 November and is dedicated to local traditions, gastronomy, history and agricultural culture. Traditional cuisine in the area includes gazpacho manchego, cocido con pelotas, rice with rabbit, arroz con costra, as well as gazpacho with partridge and hare; arroz con costra is particularly associated with the Vega Baja del Segura.
