Culture and History
The fortified church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel dominates the townscape. It has the status of a Bien de Interés Cultural, declared on 14 August 2001. Its defensive function was reinforced in the 16th century by attacks from Barbarossa’s pirates. At the same time, the church stands within a former castle from the Islamic period.
El Castellet, also known as Castell de Murla, is located on Puig d’Orba. Only a few ruined walls remain from the complex. They overlook La Rectoría, a subcomarca of the broader Marquesado de Denia. El Castellet is easily reached from the areas of Vellich and Comeig via an old bridle path.
The Ermita de la Divina Aurora is located in the town centre and is also known as the Ermita de la Sang. Its grounds formerly belonged to a hospital, more precisely to its women’s ward, and were later also used as a prison. The Font i llavador Nou de Murla is located beside the spring. It was formerly a meeting place and a leisure spot for women.
El Rajolat is a stone bench made of slabs. It is associated with the historic emigration from Murla and continues to serve as a shaded meeting place today.
Landscape and Nature
From the summit of Penyó Roig, there are views of the Xaló River, Seguili, Montgó, Segària, Carrascar and the sea. The view thus extends from a river valley across several prominent elevations to the coast.
After Murla, the Camins de pedra i aigua route continues towards Benigembla. On this section, it follows the riverbed and offers an experience of the natural environment and fauna. The LIC Conca del riu Gorgos is listed as a site of interest for Murla.
Trails and Access
The Ermita de Sant Sebastià is situated in a typically Mediterranean setting with abundant pine trees and scrubland. Nearby, there is a viewpoint equipped with benches and offering expansive views.
The Ermita de Sant Sebastià can be reached on foot via a path or by vehicle via a track. The track begins at the road connecting Murla with Fleix and Campell in La Vall de Laguar. The PR-CV 426 Penyó Roig route begins in Murla and leads via the Calvario de Murla to the Ermita de Sant Sebastià.
